TLDRs;
- Uber shares rebounded sharply after investors focused on free cash flow exceeding $10 billion.
- Strong mobility and delivery profits strengthened confidence in Uber’s multi-year autonomous vehicle strategy.
- Analysts lowered price targets, but all maintained positive ratings and saw significant upside potential.
- Robotaxi expansion remains early, with autonomous rides accounting for less than 0.5% of trips.
Uber Technologies shares staged a strong rebound on Friday, climbing 6.4% to close at $75.02 as investors shifted attention from near-term earnings concerns to the company’s rapidly expanding cash generation and long-term robotaxi ambitions.
The recovery followed a volatile week in which the stock initially fell after quarterly results before gaining roughly 10% over the final two trading sessions. The move left Uber up 6.6% for the week and suggested renewed confidence that the company can fund its autonomous vehicle strategy without putting significant pressure on its balance sheet.
At the center of the rally was a key financial milestone: trailing free cash flow surpassed $10 billion for the first time, according to the company’s finance leadership. The figure is particularly notable because it is roughly equivalent to the total value of Uber’s multi-year commitment to autonomous vehicle development and deployment.
Cash flow becomes key signal
Investors have increasingly focused on whether Uber can remain financially self-sufficient while continuing share repurchases and investing aggressively in future transportation technologies.
With a market value of about $154 billion, the company’s free-cash-flow generation implies a yield of roughly 6.5%, a level that many analysts view as supportive for a mature technology platform.
The company has emphasized that the $10 billion robotaxi initiative is not expected to be spent immediately. Instead, the investment is planned over several years and will be supported through a combination of equity investments, fleet financing structures, and vehicle-related commitments.
Management also indicated that strategic partners are contributing substantially more capital than Uber itself, reducing the company’s direct funding burden and helping preserve flexibility for other corporate priorities.
Strong operating leverage emerges
Gross bookings rose 24% year over year to $58.02 billion, while revenue increased 12% to $14.19 billion. More importantly for investors, non-GAAP operating income jumped 40% to $2.14 billion, demonstrating expanding operating leverage across the platform.
Free cash flow for the quarter reached $2.79 billion, up 13% from a year earlier. The company also benefited from a 3.5% decline in diluted weighted average shares, which helped adjusted earnings per share grow faster than net income.
Delivery generated the fastest profit growth, with segment operating income rising 38% to $1.06 billion. Mobility remained the largest earnings contributor, with operating income increasing 28% to $2.22 billion.
The improvement in margins suggested that Uber is extracting more profitability from each dollar of bookings, even as reported revenue growth was affected by business-model adjustments.
Analysts cut targets anyway
Despite the strong cash-flow narrative, Wall Street became somewhat more cautious about Uber’s long-term valuation.
Among seven major brokerages updating their views after the earnings release, six reduced their price targets. The average target fell from $106.00 to $97.43, an 8.1% decline.
However, the broader message was not bearish. Every firm maintained a positive recommendation, and the new average target still implies nearly 30% upside from Friday’s closing price.
The target reductions reflected lower valuation assumptions rather than a deterioration in the underlying business, as analysts weighed the timing and profitability of future autonomous operations.
