- eToro previously tokenized gold and silver assets and acquired tokenization startup Firmo in 2019
eToro announced plans to tokenize US-listed equities on the Ethereum blockchain as ERC-20 tokens. The digital trading platform will start with the 100 most popular US stocks and ETFs.

The tokenized assets will represent underlying shares held on eToro’s platform. Users can redeem these tokens back into traditional stock holdings at any time.
CEO Yoni Assia said the company aims to “tokenize every asset on eToro, starting with stocks.” The tokens will enable users to move assets onto the blockchain and integrate them into decentralized finance applications.
The tokenization will allow 24/5 trading access compared to traditional market hours. Users will eventually transfer tokenized stocks off the platform into self-custody wallets or DeFi protocols.
A company spokesperson confirmed users can “buy a tokenized stock on eToro, redeem it to the eToro wallet and from there to their own wallet.” They can also bring tokens back to eToro if desired.
Assia stated that new crypto regulations like MiCA in Europe and the Genius Act in the US create opportunities for tokenization. These regulations make tokenization of real-world assets “a new opportunity to create digital assets that are legally backed and regulated.”
Growing Market Competition
eToro joins several competitors who recently launched tokenized equity offerings. Robinhood announced stock token trading for European users last month on a new Arbitrum-based layer-2 blockchain.
The Robinhood platform gives European investors access to over 200 stocks and ETF tokens. These trade with zero commissions and are available 24/5.
Crypto exchanges including Kraken, Gemini, and Bybit also introduced similar tokenized stock features. Backed Finance launched over 60 tokenized stocks on these platforms and across Solana DeFi protocols.
The tokenized stocks include major companies like Netflix, Meta, Tesla, and Amazon. Crypto companies like Coinbase are also available as tokenized assets.
Previous Tokenization Experience
eToro has experience in asset tokenization beyond this stock initiative. The company acquired Danish tokenization startup Firmo in 2019 to build its capabilities.
eToro previously launched tokenized versions of gold and silver for trading. This experience provides a foundation for the expanded stock tokenization program.
Current data from RWA.xyz shows tokenized stocks represent $418 million in total value. The broader tokenized real-world asset market exceeds $21.3 billion.
Industry experts believe tokenized stocks have room for substantial growth. STOKR CEO Arnab Naskar described the potential as “definitely a bigger trillion-dollar market.”
The tokenized stocks will be unavailable in the US and other prohibited jurisdictions initially. eToro has not announced a specific launch date for the tokenized stock trading feature.
