An unidentified crypto wallet purchased 5,000 Ethereum worth approximately $9.53 million and staked the entire position just hours before a scheduled White House meeting between President Donald Trump and top crypto industry leaders.
The trade was flagged by onchain analytics platform Lookonchain on August 17. The buyer’s wallet address is public, but their identity remains anonymous, which is common in crypto markets.

The meeting took place on August 19 at 2:30 PM ET. President Trump and Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Mike Selig were both scheduled to make remarks at the event, according to Semafor.
Executives from Coinbase, Ripple, Chainlink, and venture firm a16z attended the meeting. Prediction market platform Kalshi and its backer Paradigm also sent representatives to the White House.
The session is part of the administration’s push to establish the United States as a leader in digital asset policy. Having both the SEC and CFTC chairs in the room alongside private-sector leaders points to discussions around real regulatory frameworks, possibly covering token classification, staking rules, or exchange licensing.
A Pattern of Well-Timed Trades
This is not the first large crypto trade to surface ahead of a Trump-related event. Similar positions have appeared before administration announcements throughout 2026, though no direct link to insider trading has been confirmed in any of these cases.
What makes this trade stand out is the decision to immediately stake the ETH rather than hold it for a quick sale. Staking locks tokens into the Ethereum network in exchange for yield. That move suggests the buyer has a longer time horizon and expects any outcome from the meeting to be structurally positive for Ethereum.
According to Lookonchain, the same trader has now acquired a total of 10,657 ETH worth over $20 million in total.
Market Impact and Legal Questions
Ethereum was trading at around $1,931.60 at the time of writing, up 1.8% in the last 24 hours. Ether is the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency with a market capitalization of approximately $232.82 billion.
The $9.53 million purchase is not large enough on its own to move Ethereum’s price. However, because onchain data is public and tracked in real time by analytics firms, large wallet movements can act as visible signals to other market participants.
The harder question is whether the trader had access to non-public information about the meeting’s likely outcomes. Crypto markets currently sit in a regulatory gray zone when it comes to insider trading enforcement. Traditional securities laws apply unevenly to digital assets.
Proving that someone traded on material non-public information tied to a government meeting remains a legal challenge that regulators have rarely pursued in the crypto space.
The meeting comes as the Clarity Act, a key piece of crypto legislation, failed to advance this season.
