The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
InterPositive was founded by Affleck in 2022. The company builds AI-powered tools specifically designed for movie production workflows.
The core technology centers on an AI model trained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency. It works within the realities of film production — things like missing shots, incorrect lighting, and continuity gaps.
“We also built in restraints to protect creative intent, so the tools are designed for responsible exploration while keeping creative decisions in the hands of artists,” Affleck said in a statement.
Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria echoed that framing. “We believe new tools should expand creative freedom, not constrain it or replace the work of writers, directors, actors, and crews,” she said.
Affleck, best known on the director’s chair for Oscar-winning film Argo, will now join Netflix in a new capacity as a senior advisor.
Netflix’s First Acquisition in Some Time
This deal marks Netflix’s first acquisition since the company stepped back from a competitive bid to acquire Warner Bros Discovery’s studio and streaming assets. That race was ultimately won by a rival offer from Paramount Skydance, which was deemed superior.
The acquisition signals Netflix leaning further into AI-assisted production infrastructure rather than acquiring traditional content libraries or studios.
Hollywood’s Shifting Stance on AI
The entertainment industry’s relationship with AI has changed fast. Not long ago, fears around job displacement and intellectual property dominated Hollywood conversations — and were central to the writers’ and actors’ strikes of 2023.
Now, studios are moving in the opposite direction.
Late last year, Disney announced plans to allow OpenAI to use characters from its Star Wars, Pixar, and Marvel franchises inside the startup’s Sora AI video generator.
Netflix’s InterPositive acquisition follows a similar logic — using AI as a production utility rather than a creative replacement.
InterPositive’s tools are built with specific guardrails. The AI is designed to follow cinematic rules while adapting to the messy realities of on-set production, keeping human creatives in control of final decisions.
Affleck’s involvement doesn’t end with the sale. His move to senior advisor at Netflix keeps him tied to the technology’s ongoing development inside one of the world’s largest streaming platforms.
Netflix stock was up 0.17% on Thursday.
