TLDRs;
- OpenAI offers Indian users one free year of ChatGPT Go starting November 4 to accelerate AI adoption.
- ChatGPT Go, priced at ₹399 yearly, offers faster replies, higher limits, and image generation tools.
- India’s AI market heats up as Perplexity AI and Google launch competing free premium offers.
- UPI AutoPay integration could streamline OpenAI’s subscription model under India’s RBI payment rules.
OpenAI is doubling down on its presence in India with a major promotional move: starting November 4, Indian users will get one free year of ChatGPT Go, the company’s affordable paid tier.
The plan, usually priced at 399 rupees (US$5) per year, includes expanded message limits, faster responses, image generation, and larger file uploads compared to the free version.
The announcement coincides with OpenAI’s first-ever DevDay Exchange event in India, signaling the company’s growing interest in what it now calls its second-largest and fastest-growing market. OpenAI, headquartered in San Francisco, appears to be leveraging India’s massive user base and tech-savvy demographic to solidify its global leadership in AI tools.
AI Rivals Heat Up Competition in India
OpenAI’s timing is no coincidence. The move comes amid intensifying competition from other AI players looking to dominate the Indian market.
Perplexity AI, backed by Bharti Airtel, recently began offering free premium access to millions of Airtel customers. Google, meanwhile, announced it would give students across India one year of free Gemini AI Pro access, another sign of how aggressively Big Tech is courting Indian users.
These competing offers underscore India’s growing influence in the AI ecosystem. As a young, mobile-first economy, India represents an enormous pool of potential subscribers. Yet, for all the hype, most firms, including OpenAI, remain tight-lipped about their Indian user metrics, including monthly active users and average revenue per user (ARPU).
India’s AI Surge
OpenAI revealed that ChatGPT ranked fourth among India’s most visited websites in September 2025, signaling extraordinary user engagement.
Data from analytics platforms shows ChatGPT drew 5.8 billion global visits in August 2025, nearly ten times that of Google’s Gemini. However, the company has yet to disclose how much of that traffic originates from India, leaving analysts guessing about the platform’s true penetration.
Following the local launch of ChatGPT Go in August, user numbers doubled within a month, according to internal estimates. The new free-year offer could spark another wave of growth, though analysts warn it might inflate usage without boosting paid conversions.
Still, India’s appetite for AI tools continues to expand. From content creation to coding assistance, millions of professionals and students are weaving ChatGPT into their daily workflows.
UPI AutoPay Could Unlock New AI Subscription Models
One key to sustaining this growth lies in payment infrastructure. India’s strict Reserve Bank of India (RBI) rules cap automatic card payments at ₹5,000 per transaction, complicating international SaaS subscriptions like OpenAI’s. However, the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has emerged as a lifeline.
By January 2025, UPI AutoPay accounted for 53% of recurring payments in India. With total UPI volume surpassing 17 billion transactions in June 2025, payment gateways that integrate AutoPay APIs for AI subscriptions can unlock massive opportunities. Once a one-time authentication is set, users can authorize auto-debits up to ₹15,000, making it easier for OpenAI to convert free users into paying customers next year.
Gateways that automate pre-debit alerts and easy opt-outs also help maintain compliance with RBI’s 2021 e-mandate rules, reducing merchant friction while keeping users in control.
