Tesla (TSLA) is gearing up to put its Cybercab robotaxi on public roads in Austin, Texas, potentially before the end of August, according to reports from The Information.

The company has told employees it plans to first offer rides to staff on public roads, then roll the vehicles into its wider Robotaxi service in the city within days of that initial launch.
Tesla began testing the production version of the Cybercab on public roads back in June. Since then, the company has been running through a staged testing process that includes employee rides on private roads and training sessions with local first responders.
The Cybercab is built from the ground up for autonomous driving. It has no steering wheel and no pedals. It is a compact two-seat electric vehicle with a single 219-hp motor, a 48-kWh battery, and a curb weight of around 3,113 pounds.
TSLA stock was trading around $339.84 on Monday, up 0.16%.
Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja confirmed during the Q2 earnings call that the company had already started doing Cybercab rides inside its Austin factory. That was the first public confirmation that production had begun.
Elon Musk has said Tesla needs to collect driving data specific to the Cybercab before it can put a large number of them on the road. That is the main reason volume production is not expected until next year at the earliest.
What the Cybercab Rollout Looks Like
The soft launch in Austin is expected to follow a phased approach. Employee rides on public roads come first. A broader commercial rollout through Tesla’s Robotaxi service follows shortly after.
Tesla has not officially confirmed a specific date. The company did not respond to press requests for comment on the timeline.
Tesla Board Chair Robyn Denholm said last year that the company remains open to adding traditional controls to the Cybercab if needed, though the current production design does not include them.
Impact on Competitors
Uber (UBER) and Lyft (LYFT) both moved slightly lower on Monday afternoon as investors tracked the Cybercab news. The dips were modest but reflected market attention on the robotaxi space.
Tesla’s Robotaxi service, if it scales, would compete directly with both ride-hailing platforms in markets where it operates.
Musk has described robotaxis as one of Tesla’s biggest long-term growth opportunities. A successful Austin launch would be the first real-world test of that thesis on public roads.
Tesla has been testing FSD (Full Self-Driving) across its existing vehicle lineup for years. The Cybercab represents a separate effort, purpose-built for driverless operation with no manual override option in its base form.
The company’s Q2 earnings call also confirmed that Cybercab production has started, with rides already happening inside the Austin factory as of the call date.
