TLDR
- Shein stock dropped as much as 10% in Hong Kong after a contact lens product recall in Australia and New Zealand.
- New Zealand’s Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment confirmed lenses tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex, a bacterial contaminant.
- The contamination was found in the solution used to package the lenses, not the lenses themselves.
- A UK user reportedly developed an eye infection linked to the product.
- The recall adds pressure to Shein following its rocky Hong Kong stock market debut earlier this month.
Shein stock fell as much as 10% in Hong Kong on Monday after Australia and New Zealand issued urgent recalls of one of its contact lens products.
Hong Kong-listed shares (625-HK) were trading 9.49% lower at HK$36.26 at the time of reporting.
The recall was triggered after a sample of the contact lenses tested positive for Burkholderia cepacia complex, a bacterial contaminant found in the solution used to package the lenses.

New Zealand’s Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment confirmed the finding on Friday, warning that exposure to the bacteria could cause eye infection or irritation.
The ministry also noted that an incident had already been reported in the United Kingdom, where a user developed an eye infection connected to the product.
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission issued a separate but similar recall notice around the same time.
This latest development comes at a difficult moment for the fast-fashion retailer. Shein had a shaky debut on the Hong Kong stock exchange earlier this month, and investor confidence was already under strain.
Pressure Mounts After Troubled Listing
Shein’s business model has faced growing headwinds in key Western markets. Tariffs and regulatory changes in Europe and the United States have put pressure on its low-cost approach, which built the brand into a global name.
Analysts at Euromonitor International have said Shein will need to rethink its value proposition beyond cheap prices and fast product turnover. Suggestions include curating its marketplace and expanding its services.
Brand image has also come under scrutiny. Regulators and public opinion in several markets have grown more critical of the company in recent months.
The contact lens recall adds a product safety dimension to those concerns, which is a new type of challenge for a company primarily known for clothing.
What the Recall Means for Investors
The 10% intraday drop reflects how quickly sentiment can shift around a stock that was already carrying uncertainty from its listing.
Shein expanded into beauty and lifestyle products as part of its broader marketplace push. A product safety issue in that category, especially one involving eye health, draws a sharper reaction than a typical supply chain or pricing story.
The recall affects product sold through Shein’s platform in Australia and New Zealand, with regulators urging consumers to stop using the lenses immediately and return them.
Shein has not issued a public statement in response to the recalls at the time of publication.
