Anthropic has built a physical biology laboratory in the San Francisco Bay Area. The AI startup, best known for its Claude models, confirmed the wet lab in a Reuters interview this week.

Eric Kauderer-Abrams, Anthropic’s head of life sciences, said the company believes real lab work is still the final test for biology. The lab is not focused on drug discovery specifically, according to a company spokesperson, who declined to give more details.
Anthropic has been open about wanting to tackle diseases that the pharmaceutical industry has largely ignored. The company says it wants to focus on conditions that are not financially attractive to traditional drug makers.
CEO Dario Amodei has spoken personally about why this matters to him. His father died of a disease just a few years before a cure was found, he wrote in a recent essay.
Acquisitions and Partnerships
Anthropic has been building out its life sciences operation quickly. The company acquired a startup called Coefficient Bio for around $400 million in stock. It also added Novartis CEO Vas Narasimhan to its board and launched a software product called Claude Science.
The company is now actively hiring for biology-related roles. Job listings have sought experts in protein and nucleic acid characterization, as well as a leader to ramp up procurement and operations.
Anthropic is also working with major pharmaceutical companies. It is providing AI tools and services to Genentech, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Novo Nordisk, among others.
The company says it is not trying to compete with pharma firms in bringing drugs to market. Kauderer-Abrams said Anthropic has set a boundary that it will not run clinical trials for now.
Balancing Risk and Ambition
Anthropic is moving into drug science at a complicated moment. Some of its own researchers recently warned that AI could lead to human extinction. The company also said it found cases where its systems could have been used toward biological weapons development, a claim that met with some skepticism.
CEO Dario Amodei has also called for a slowdown in AI development, citing risks of catastrophic damage from future, more powerful systems.
At the same time, the company is preparing for a potential IPO that could value it at around $2 trillion.
Kauderer-Abrams said Anthropic wants its Claude AI to direct robotic units to carry out lab experiments with limited human intervention. Still, the company says human oversight remains essential.
Rival Alphabet’s drug discovery arm, Isomorphic Labs, has been working toward clinical trials for years and recently delayed that goal to the end of 2026. Anthropic has not yet taken on the challenge of human trials.
The company launched a product called the Model Hardware Standard in August to help AI operate lab equipment. Life sciences is now one of Anthropic’s largest investment areas by headcount and resources.
