TLDR
- Trezor will reduce its authorized reseller network starting Jan. 1, 2027.
- The move follows reports that Ledger devices sold by a Southeast Asian reseller contained hidden implants.
- Estimated losses range from $72 million to $93 million, and Ledger has not confirmed a total.
- Trezor says there is no evidence its own devices have been compromised.
- Trezor advises buying directly from the company and considering multisignature wallets.
Hardware wallet maker Trezor said it will cut the number of resellers allowed to sell its devices. The company called the move a “preventive step, taken out of an abundance of caution.”
Trezor shared the news in a Tuesday post on X. It said there is “not a single piece of evidence” that its devices have been compromised.
Following recent supply-chain incidents, we decided to reduce the number of resellers so we can more effectively check those we work with.
Let us be very clear: there is not a single piece of evidence that Trezor devices have been compromised.

Chief commercial officer Danny Sanders said some resellers have been told they will be removed from the authorized list on Jan. 1, 2027. He added that shipments to those resellers would stop on Tuesday.
Trezor shared a letter sent to select partners. It said a hardware wallet is “only as safe as the path it travels to reach its owner.”

The letter also said the company wants a reseller network small enough that it can vet every remaining partner. Those partners will face an updated legal framework and closer checks on how devices are sourced, stored and handled.
What Happened With Ledger
The decision came days after Ledger confirmed that at least one of its devices bought from a Southeast Asian reseller held an unauthorized hardware implant. The reseller is called CryptoBilis.
Reports say the implants were soldered into the devices. They captured recovery phrases and sent them over cellular networks.
The incident came to light on Oct. 9, 2026. Attackers are said to have tampered with devices sold through a third-party reseller.
CryptoBilis is also an authorized Trezor reseller. It suspended all hardware wallet sales during the investigation.
MediaMarkt’s parent company also said it removed all Ledger products from its physical stores and online platforms. It called the step a precaution.
How Much Was Lost
Blockchain researchers are still working to measure the losses. Research from two individuals suggested between $72 million and $86 million.
Other reports put the estimated total at $93 million. Ledger said on Tuesday it had not confirmed the total number of affected users or the total value lost.
Trezor’s Response
A Trezor spokesperson told Cointelegraph that its setup checks are built to catch counterfeit devices and modified firmware. The implant found in the CryptoBilis device works differently, the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson said it does not change the firmware. Instead, it reads information on the screen and sends it to the attacker later. Trezor said it has not seen this type of attack on its devices in the real world.
The company urged users to buy directly from Trezor and check that the seal is intact. It also suggested using a multisignature wallet with devices from different makers, so one compromised device cannot move funds alone.
A Difficult Year for Hardware Wallets
The reports say hardware wallet firms have faced close to a dozen incidents this year. These include data breaches, laser fault injection disclosures and a firmware entropy bug.
Trezor had its own incident in August. A data breach at a third-party fulfillment provider exposed personal information for tens of thousands of customers.
The most recent update is that Trezor’s reseller removals take effect on Jan. 1, 2027. Investigators continue to work on the full scale of the Ledger losses.
