CoinGlass data checked during Asian morning hours showed ether contracts at about $286 million in liquidations. Bitcoin contracts had $197 million. Ether made up nearly 60% of the forced closures across the two largest coins.
Ether fell about twice as much as bitcoin. Its futures market is smaller, though. Outstanding ether contracts totaled about $30 billion, compared with $52 billion for bitcoin.
Of the bitcoin liquidations, roughly $176 million came from longs. XRP and Solana fell around 5%. Dogecoin dropped roughly 6%.
How Liquidations Work
A liquidation happens when a trader uses borrowed money and a price move leaves too little collateral. The exchange then closes the position automatically. A trader who puts up $1,000 to control a $10,000 position can lose their backing on a move of less than 10% against them.
These forced closures can add pressure to a falling market. Traders are pushed out whether or not they wanted to sell at that price. The liquidation figures measure the value of positions closed, not the cash traders lost.
Smaller tokens were hit too. Solana futures saw about $31 million in liquidations as SOL fell roughly 5.5%. Zcash contracts added nearly $19 million, with ZEC dropping about 13%.
The selling came in a short window. Coinglass recorded $489.4 million in liquidations in the most recent hour. That is more than half of the 24-hour total.
Binance handled 53.7% of all liquidations. The exchange also hosted the largest single order. It was a $12.03 million BTCUSDT long closed at $80,208.96.
Contracts tied to traditional assets also took losses. Traders on crypto exchanges saw $22.1 million in silver positions and $13.3 million in gold positions liquidated.
Total crypto market value fell 4.96% in 24 hours to $2.76 trillion, according to BeInCrypto Markets data. Ether dropped 5.31% to $2,373.87, the steepest decline among the five largest coins. Bitcoin fell 2.54% to $81,328.
