Dell Technologies (NYSE: DELL) stock surged roughly 5% in after-hours trading on Tuesday after Super Micro Computer delivered a much stronger-than-expected outlook for AI server profitability, fueling renewed confidence across the artificial intelligence hardware sector.
The rally followed several volatile trading sessions for Dell, whose shares had been under pressure amid investor concerns that explosive AI server demand was not translating into stronger company-wide profit margins. Super Micro’s preliminary results, however, suggested that profitability across AI infrastructure could improve faster than many investors had anticipated, triggering buying across server manufacturers.
AI Margins Lift Sentiment
The catalyst came after Super Micro projected fourth-quarter gross margins between 15% and 17%, a dramatic improvement from its previous expectation of roughly 8%. Although revenue guidance remained largely unchanged, the stronger margin forecast signaled that pricing conditions and product mix may be improving for AI server manufacturers.
Investors quickly interpreted the update as positive for other companies heavily involved in enterprise AI infrastructure, including Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise.
Dell shares rose to approximately $427 in extended trading, representing a gain of nearly 6% from the regular-session close. The move temporarily added an estimated $15 billion to the company’s market value, substantially exceeding the market-cap increase implied by Super Micro’s own rally.
The reaction reflected optimism that Dell could eventually experience similar improvements as its AI server business continues expanding.
AI Business Keeps Growing
Dell‘s AI infrastructure business continues to expand as demand for enterprise AI servers remains strong. In its latest quarter, AI server revenue reached $16.1 billion, surpassing the company’s traditional PC business, which generated $14.6 billion.
Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said the AI opportunity “shows no signs of slowing,” with Dell targeting approximately $60 billion in AI server revenue for fiscal 2027.
Even so, profitability remains under pressure. Dell’s gross margin declined to 17.8% from 21.1% a year earlier. Investors hope improving conditions across the AI server market could help reverse that trend in the coming quarters.
Recent Weakness Reverses
The latest gains also marked a sharp turnaround following a difficult stretch for Dell shares. The stock had fallen nearly 9% over the previous week, including a particularly steep decline during mid-July, before recovering alongside Tuesday’s broader rebound in technology stocks.
The Nasdaq Composite advanced about 1.3% during regular trading as investors rotated back into AI-related companies. Dell outperformed the broader technology benchmark, indicating renewed confidence in businesses positioned to benefit from long-term AI infrastructure spending.
Meanwhile, Hewlett Packard Enterprise also posted meaningful after-hours gains, while HP Inc., whose business is more closely tied to personal computers than enterprise AI servers, saw little movement. The differing reactions highlighted investors’ continued preference for companies with meaningful exposure to data center and AI hardware demand.
