TLDRs;
- Lumen stock fell 9% despite stronger-than-expected revenue and adjusted earnings, as investors questioned cash-flow sustainability.
- Strategic revenue surpassed legacy sales for the first time, signaling progress in the company’s network transformation.
- Analysts focused on one-time items that may inflate 2026 free-cash-flow guidance and overstate underlying cash generation.
- Rising leverage, declining EBITDA, and uncertainty around Alkira revenue kept Wall Street cautious after the earnings report.
Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) shares dropped sharply on Wednesday, falling more than 9% even after the company delivered quarterly revenue and earnings figures that exceeded Wall Street expectations. The reaction highlighted a growing divide between improving operational trends and investor concerns about how much of Lumen’s projected free cash flow is truly recurring.
The stock closed at $6.08, down 9.39% for the session, while trading volume surged to nearly 29.9 million shares, more than double its recent average. The decline erased the previous day’s gains and left the stock modestly lower over the past five trading sessions.
Stronger Results Fail To Lift Shares
Lumen reported second-quarter revenue of $2.805 billion, topping analyst estimates of $2.77 billion. The company also posted an adjusted loss of $0.07 per share, better than the expected $0.14 loss.

The most notable improvement came from the company’s strategic business lines. Strategic revenue rose 14.1% year over year to $1.289 billion, while legacy revenue fell 15.1% to $1.155 billion. For the first time, strategic sales exceeded legacy sales, marking a significant milestone in Lumen’s effort to shift away from declining traditional telecom services.
Adjusted EBITDA excluding special items was $802 million, down 8.6% from a year earlier, although the EBITDA margin improved slightly to 28.6%.
Strategic Business Takes The Lead
The crossover between strategic and legacy revenue represented a major change in the company’s business mix. A year ago, strategic revenue trailed legacy revenue by roughly $230 million. This quarter, it exceeded legacy revenue by $134 million, a swing of more than $360 million.
Lumen said strategic products now account for 53% of business revenue, up from 45% a year earlier.
Growth was particularly strong in Network-as-a-Service offerings. The company reported a 22% sequential increase in customers, a 34% rise in fabric ports, and a 29% increase in services.
Chief Executive Kate Johnson said the company is embedding innovation directly into its network infrastructure, emphasizing the long-term opportunity in cloud networking and enterprise connectivity.
Cash-Flow Questions Dominate
Despite those operational gains, investors focused on the quality of Lumen’s free-cash-flow outlook.Lumen reaffirmed 2026 free-cash-flow guidance with a midpoint of $2.0 billion. On the surface, that implies a free-cash-flow yield of roughly 32% relative to the company’s equity value, an unusually high figure that would normally support a much higher valuation.
However, market participants questioned whether that cash generation is sustainable. A preliminary adjustment that removes $729 million in divestiture proceeds related to the AT&T transaction and $400 million in expected tax refunds reduces estimated recurring-like free cash flow to about $871 million. That would imply a yield closer to 14%, still attractive but far less extraordinary than the headline number.
Lumen stressed that this adjusted figure is not company guidance, but the exercise helped explain why investors reacted negatively even after the earnings beat.
