TLDRs;
- Meta shares declined as investors weighed rising AI infrastructure costs against future growth opportunities.
- The company’s 2026 capital spending plans require a sharp acceleration in quarterly expenditures.
- Investors await earnings for clues on AI returns, advertising strength, and free cash flow trends.
- Meta’s strong ad business continues supporting optimism despite concerns over aggressive investment levels.
Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) stock came under pressure as investors examined the company’s rapidly expanding capital expenditure plans and the financial demands of its artificial intelligence ambitions. Shares closed at $627.17 after falling 2.6% during the latest trading session, extending losses to roughly 8% over the past five sessions.
The decline comes as Meta prepares to significantly increase its spending pace throughout the remainder of 2026. While the company has continued benefiting from strong advertising momentum, investors are increasingly focused on whether its massive investments in AI infrastructure will generate enough returns to justify the higher costs.
AI Spending Drives New Concerns
Meta expects total capital expenditures for 2026 to reach between $125 billion and $145 billion, with the midpoint standing at approximately $135 billion. That outlook represents a major increase from previous spending levels as the company expands data centers, computing capacity, and other infrastructure needed to support artificial intelligence development.
During the first quarter, Meta recorded capital expenditures of $19.84 billion. To reach the midpoint of its annual forecast, the company would need to spend approximately $38.39 billion per quarter from the second quarter through the end of the year.
That represents nearly a 94% increase compared with the first-quarter spending rate. The acceleration has raised questions among investors about whether Meta’s aggressive AI investment strategy could pressure margins and limit free cash flow in the near term.
Although Meta has not provided a breakdown showing how much of its capital spending is directly tied to AI, much of the company’s infrastructure expansion is connected to its efforts to compete in the artificial intelligence race against rivals including Alphabet, Microsoft, and other major technology firms.
Investors Await Earnings Signals
Meta’s upcoming second-quarter earnings report on July 29 will provide investors with a closer look at how quickly spending is increasing and whether the company’s revenue growth can absorb the additional costs.
Market expectations currently point toward quarterly revenue of around $60.21 billion, while earnings forecasts place adjusted earnings per share near $7.19 to $7.20. Meta has previously guided revenue between $58 billion and $61 billion.
Meta generated $12.39 billion in free cash flow during the first quarter, providing some financial flexibility. However, continued increases in infrastructure spending could test the company’s ability to maintain strong cash generation while funding its long-term AI strategy.
Advertising Business Remains Strong
Despite concerns surrounding spending, Meta’s core advertising business continues to provide support for the company’s investment plans. First-quarter revenue increased 33%, helped by higher advertising demand and improved pricing.
The company reported a 19% increase in ad impressions, while average advertising prices climbed 12%. These trends demonstrate that Meta’s existing business remains healthy and capable of financing its expansion efforts.
Some analysts remain optimistic about the company’s long-term outlook. Dominic Ball of Rothschild & Co Redburn recently raised his price target for Meta to $1,000 from $900 while maintaining a Buy rating, suggesting confidence that AI investments could eventually create significant value.
However, investors remain cautious after Alphabet highlighted broader industry concerns. The Google parent recently increased its 2026 capital expenditure forecast to between $195 billion and $205 billion, while also reporting negative quarterly free cash flow.
