Washington had already been tracking what officials described as “a steady drumbeat” of intelligence about possible assassination plots. But the Israeli warning stood out because it pointed to a particular plan, not just general chatter.
Iran has openly vowed for years to retaliate against Trump for the killing of General Qassem Soleimani. Soleimani was a top commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Trump ordered the strike in January 2020, during his first term in office.
Trump Acknowledges the Threats
Trump addressed the threats publicly while speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Wednesday, as he returned from a NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey.
“They want to take out the U.S. leader — me,” Trump said. “I’m on every single one of their lists.”
He did not go into specifics but suggested he had seen intelligence that morning about the threats against him.
At the NATO summit, Trump also made an unusual decision to fly home on his older Air Force One plane, sending his new Qatari-gifted jet ahead to Britain. The New York Times reported the switch was made at the request of the U.S. Secret Service as a security precaution.
The switch came as the U.S. launched fresh strikes against Iran, which shares a border with Turkey, where the summit was held.
U.S.-Iran Ceasefire Under Strain
The U.S. and Iran reached a fragile ceasefire last month. But renewed strikes on both sides have raised fears that a return to full-scale conflict could be close.
Trump has said he wants a way out of the conflict, citing concerns that continued fighting could damage the global economy.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has pushed for a different approach. He has urged keeping up attacks on Iran to achieve more war aims.
The two leaders spoke on Thursday. Netanyahu’s office said they agreed to continue “coordination between the countries.” Trump also updated Netanyahu on recent U.S. activity in the Gulf.
Their relationship has shown signs of strain in recent weeks. The two men have had a series of tense phone calls as their positions on the Iran conflict have drifted apart.
At the funeral of slain Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, mourners unveiled a banner that read “We Will Kill Trump.” Crowds chanted for the president’s death.
The Israeli Embassy in Washington declined to comment on the intelligence sharing. Iran’s Mission to the United Nations did not respond to a request for comment.
