U.S.-listed cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase has expanded its artificial intelligence strategy by introducing new products for businesses, users, and developers. Coinbase AI payments became the center of the latest rollout, which aims to let AI agents complete payments without manual support.
The company announced that Coinbase Business users can now accept payments from AI agents through the x402 protocol. The protocol was developed and incubated by Coinbase. The service uses USDC through Coinbase Payments and requires no extra setup for eligible businesses. The company described Coinbase AI payments as its most high-conviction bet for the growing agentic economy.
Coinbase AI payments expand business checkout options
The new system allows AI agents to make purchases from businesses using USDC. Coinbase said merchants can accept these payments through the x402 protocol while continuing to use Coinbase Payments. Coinbase AI payments are designed to simplify online transactions between AI agents and businesses.
Sid Coelho-Prabhu, Head of Coinbase Business, said the company wants to recreate the traditional shopping experience for the internet. He explained that AI agents can create wallets through Coinbase developer tools before making purchases. Businesses can then offer their products through an agent-friendly checkout process powered by Coinbase AI payments.

Coinbase also introduced new features for exchange users who rely on AI agents for market activity. The platform now provides a live order list that streams an agent’s open and active orders in real time. Coinbase AI payments are part of a broader strategy that also includes agent-powered trading support.
Users can give trading instructions in plain English, such as buying Ethereum after a price drop or selling after an order fills. AI agents monitor market conditions and execute trades when the requested conditions are met. Coinbase said the same WebSocket market data used by institutional traders is now available through natural language tools alongside Coinbase AI payments.
Developer tools aim to speed adoption
Coinbase also released a new x402 software development kit through Coinbase Developer Platform. Developers can add payment support to APIs, MCP servers, or web services with three lines of code. The company said Coinbase AI payments can now be integrated into applications with less development time.
The latest launch targets businesses, developers, and users building AI-powered services. Coinbase said the new products create a connected system where agents can pay, trade, and interact with online services. The company expects Coinbase AI payments to support wider adoption as more businesses begin accepting AI agent transactions. Coinbase said Coinbase AI payments remain a key focus as the technology develops, with Coinbase AI payments positioned at the center of its long-term product strategy.
