TLDRs;
- Archer Aviation held onto most of its Thunder-driven gains despite a modest decline in Tuesday’s trading session.
- Investors added nearly $640 million to Archer’s market value following the defense-focused Thunder aircraft announcement.
- Heavy trading volume and short-covering activity amplified the rally as investors responded to Archer’s military expansion plans.
- Markets now await customer announcements and funding details to determine whether Archer’s higher valuation is justified.
Archer Aviation (NYSE: ACHR) stock paused after a sharp rally, slipping 0.6% on Tuesday to close at $5.28. The modest decline came just one day after shares surged nearly 20% following the company’s unveiling of Thunder, a new hybrid-electric aircraft developed for defense applications. Despite Tuesday’s pullback, the two-day rally boosted Archer’s market capitalization by an estimated $644 million, lifting the company’s valuation to approximately $4.05 billion.
The market reaction reflected growing investor optimism that Archer could establish a meaningful presence in the defense sector alongside its existing ambitions in electric air mobility. Although the latest announcement did not include any contract awards or financial commitments, traders appeared willing to assign significant value to the company’s long-term military opportunity.
Thunder Sparks Investor Optimism
Archer’s latest catalyst centered on Thunder, a hybrid-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft created in partnership with defense technology company Anduril. The aircraft is designed specifically for military missions, with its autonomous Group 5 attack rotorcraft variant targeting future defense applications.
Company executives emphasized that Thunder was developed as an entirely new platform rather than a modified version of an existing aircraft. Chief Executive Officer Adam Goldstein said the design was created to meet a specific operational need identified by its defense partner, highlighting the customized nature of the project.
Even so, investors are valuing a business opportunity that remains largely prospective. Thunder is not expected to complete its first flight until 2027, and Archer has yet to disclose any orders, contracts, or revenue projections tied to the platform.
Rally Outpaces Industry Peers
The strength of Archer’s rally stood out against both competitors and the broader market. During the previous week, Archer and fellow electric aviation company Joby Aviation delivered similarly weak performances. That pattern changed dramatically after the Thunder announcement.
On Monday, Archer shares climbed 19.6%, while Joby gained only 3.3%. By Tuesday, Archer eased slightly while Joby advanced another 2.5%. Even with Tuesday’s decline, Archer remained up nearly 19% for the week, significantly outperforming both Joby and the Russell 2000 index.
Trading activity also reflected unusually strong investor interest. Nearly 98.3 million Archer shares changed hands on Monday, representing almost four times the average daily trading volume recorded during the previous week. Tuesday’s volume remained more than double normal levels, indicating that investor attention remained elevated despite the slight decline.
Financial Reality Still Matters
While the market welcomed Archer’s defense ambitions, investors continue to weigh the company’s current financial performance against its long-term potential.
Archer entered the year with approximately $1.776 billion in cash and short-term investments, providing substantial liquidity to support aircraft development and certification efforts. However, the company continues to generate limited revenue while investing heavily in growth.
The recent increase in market value alone exceeded three times the company’s quarterly adjusted EBITDA loss, illustrating how aggressively investors priced in expectations surrounding Thunder’s future commercial potential.
