TLDRs;
- AT&T shares gained after stronger subscriber additions boosted confidence in its aggressive capital return strategy.
- The telecom giant plans nearly $10 billion in 2026 buybacks while maintaining strong free cash flow expectations.
- Wireless and fiber growth helped offset weaker revenue trends and supported investor optimism around AT&T’s recovery.
- Debt levels and rising interest costs remain key challenges despite improving operational momentum.
AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) shares moved higher after the telecommunications giant delivered stronger-than-expected subscriber growth and reinforced its plan to accelerate shareholder returns through a $10 billion stock repurchase program. The company’s latest results showed improving momentum across key growth areas, giving investors renewed confidence in its ability to generate cash and reward shareholders.
The stock closed at $23.04 after rising 3.5% during Wednesday’s session, extending its gains to 7.5% over the previous five trading days. The move came as investors focused less on headline revenue pressure and more on AT&T’s improving wireless performance, expanding fiber business, and commitment to returning capital.
Subscriber Gains Boost Confidence
One of the biggest drivers behind the positive market reaction was AT&T’s postpaid phone subscriber performance. The company added 432,000 postpaid phone customers during the quarter, significantly exceeding analyst expectations of approximately 338,500 additions.
The stronger-than-anticipated subscriber growth suggested AT&T continues to gain traction in the competitive wireless market. Investors viewed the results as evidence that the company’s strategy of improving customer retention, expanding connectivity offerings, and bundling services is beginning to produce measurable results.
AT&T also reported 367,000 net fiber customer additions and 279,000 new fixed wireless connections, highlighting continued demand for its broadband services. The company said its strategy of combining wireless and internet offerings is gaining momentum, with a significant portion of advanced internet customers also using AT&T’s mobile services.
This cross-selling approach has become a major part of AT&T’s effort to increase customer value while reducing reliance on slower-growing legacy operations.
Buyback Plan Takes Center Stage
The company’s decision to increase its planned 2026 share repurchases to approximately $10 billion has become a major focus for investors. Chief Executive John Stankey said AT&T is accelerating buybacks due to confidence in the company’s market position and financial strength.

During the first half of the year, AT&T spent $4.435 billion repurchasing 174 million shares, translating to an average purchase price of about $25.49 per share. That figure remains above the stock’s recent closing price, creating a gap that some investors view as an opportunity for additional repurchases.
Based on current share levels, the remaining buyback authorization could allow AT&T to retire a meaningful portion of outstanding shares if prices remain below previous purchase averages. The company’s capital return strategy also includes its dividend, which represents another significant commitment to shareholders.
AT&T expects total shareholder returns from dividends and buybacks to approach $17.6 billion, representing a substantial portion of its market value.
Cash Flow Supports Strategy
AT&T’s quarterly results strengthened the argument behind its capital return plans. The company generated $4.7 billion in free cash flow, exceeding analyst expectations of $4.43 billion. It maintained its forecast for annual free cash flow of at least $18 billion.
Adjusted earnings per share also topped expectations, coming in at $0.65 compared with the consensus estimate of $0.59. However, revenue slightly missed forecasts, reaching $31.56 billion compared with expectations of $31.80 billion.
The company’s underlying business performance was stronger than the revenue figure suggested. Advanced Connectivity services revenue increased 5.1%, while operating income from the segment climbed 20.3%. Meanwhile, operating margins improved by 350 basis points.
These improvements indicate AT&T’s growth strategy is increasingly shifting toward higher-value services, including fiber internet and advanced connectivity solutions.
