AFWERX is the innovation arm of the U.S. Air Force. It partnered with the Air Force Research Laboratory to streamline the SBIR and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) process — cutting down timelines and reducing red tape for small businesses.
The DAF first launched its Open Topic SBIR/STTR program back in 2018. The program broadened the range of innovations the Air Force funds and opened the door for more small businesses to compete.
What the Contract Means for NANO Nuclear
CEO James Walker said the award is “another meaningful step” in the company’s defense commercialization strategy.
“We now have multiple active engagements with the Department of the Air Force that demonstrate increasing confidence in our technology and technical capabilities,” Walker added.
Founder and Chairman Jay Yu pointed to energy resilience as a growing priority across the U.S. military.
“Advanced microreactors have the potential to fundamentally change how critical installations are powered,” Yu said.
Yu also called the award a form of “commercial validation” of the company’s technology roadmap.
Growing Footprint with the Air Force
NANO Nuclear said the contract strengthens its relationship with the DAF and opens pathways toward future defense deployment opportunities.
The company mentioned the possibility of expanding to additional Air Force installations and, eventually, the broader Department of War.
This is not the company’s first engagement with the Air Force. The contract adds to what NANO Nuclear describes as multiple active programs already underway.
The KRONOS MMR™ is a microreactor designed for energy resilience in critical and remote military installations.
The SBIR Phase I award is an early-stage research contract. It is typically followed by Phase II and Phase III contracts if results are strong.
NANO Nuclear has been positioning itself as a player in the defense energy market, targeting long-term deployment opportunities across military installations.
