TLDR
- Zayo has signed an expanded fiber optic supply agreement with Corning (GLW) through 2030.
- The deal secures fiber for Zayo’s plan to add 15,000 route miles to its network by 2030.
- Over 8,000 miles of new long-haul fiber will be built in collaboration with NVIDIA.
- AI infrastructure growth is driving demand for faster, denser network construction.
- Corning (GLW) stock fell 4.65% to $152.46 on the day of the announcement.
Zayo has locked in a long-term fiber optic cable supply deal with Corning (GLW), securing the materials it needs to execute one of the largest network buildouts in its history.
Corning stock dropped 4.65% to $152.46 on the day, with after-hours trading showing a further dip to $152.21.
The agreement runs through 2030 and covers a large portion of the fiber Zayo has projected it will need over that period. For Zayo, it removes a key materials risk from a multi-year construction plan.
Zayo is planning to add 15,000 route miles to its network by the end of the decade. More than 8,000 of those miles will be new long-haul fiber, built in partnership with NVIDIA.
CEO Steve Smith said AI infrastructure is changing where and how fast network capacity needs to be built. Locking in fiber supply, he said, means material availability won’t slow down delivery.
The push behind this deal is AI. Data centers and cloud providers are demanding more fiber, faster, and in greater density than before. That pressure is working its way down to raw material supply chains.
AI Demand Is Reshaping Network Planning
Corning’s Senior Vice President Steve Mitchell said AI is driving up both the amount and density of fiber optic cable needed across networks. He described the deal as combining Corning’s optical technology with Zayo’s network expertise to build physical AI infrastructure at scale.
Troy Lupe, Zayo’s Chief Network Officer, pointed out that long-haul network construction takes years of planning, permitting, and execution. Getting fiber supply locked in early removes one critical variable from that process.
Zayo currently operates a network of 32 million fiber miles and 224,000 route miles across North America. It connects more than 400 markets globally, serving carriers, cloud providers, data centers, enterprises, schools, and governments.
A Network Built for the AI Era
The NVIDIA collaboration is a notable part of the expansion. More than half of the new route miles planned are tied to that long-haul buildout, pointing to how hyperscaler demand is directly shaping physical network investment.
For Corning, the deal is a supply commitment, not a one-off order. It gives the glassmaker a clearer demand picture through the rest of the decade, even if the market didn’t react warmly on the day.
The agreement was announced via press release on August 20, 2026. Corning closed the session at $152.46, down $7.44 on the day.
