A 15-year-old New Jersey girl has voluntarily dismissed her lawsuit against Meta Platforms, Alphabet’s Google and Snap, dropping claims that their platforms contributed to her social media addiction, depression and self-harm.

Her attorney, Emily Jeffcott, said the teen wanted to “resume her life.” Jeffcott said her client had originally sought to hold social media companies accountable and push for stronger protections for young users.
The companies confirmed she received no payment. TikTok, also named in her case, had previously settled her claims.
The case, identified in California court records under the name P. M-Y., was one of more than 3,300 personal injury cases consolidated in California state court in Los Angeles.
It had been selected as one of three bellwether cases set for trial in October. Bellwether cases are test cases that help attorneys gauge how juries might view similar claims, guiding potential settlements across thousands of other lawsuits.
What the Companies Said
Meta said the teen had a “significant mental health condition” that predated her social media use and said it would defend the remaining cases.
YouTube said the dismissal confirmed its position that it provides “safe, age-appropriate experiences” for young users. Snap said it remains focused on strengthening safety tools and resources.
Two other teen cases making similar allegations against Meta, Google and Snap are still scheduled for trial in October. TikTok has already settled those two cases as well.
Broader Legal Picture
The broader litigation involves thousands of lawsuits from individuals, states and school districts accusing social media companies of harming children. The companies deny the allegations.
An earlier bellwether trial concluded in March. A woman who alleged she became addicted to social media platforms at a young age was awarded verdicts totaling $6 million, split between Meta and Google. TikTok and Snap settled before that trial began.
Meta is currently defending itself in two separate state-level trials. One involves claims from 29 states and is proceeding in federal court in Oakland, California. A second trial, brought by Tennessee, is underway in Nashville.
Another bellwether case ended before trial in July when a teenage plaintiff dropped his claims against Meta after other defendants settled.
Meta closed Thursday at $545.83, down 0.20%. Snap fell 0.57% to $5.21. Alphabet’s Class C shares dropped 1.02% to $338.20.
