Apple is entering a new era. John Ternus officially takes the CEO chair on September 1, and the clock is already ticking.
🇺🇸 Apple gets a new CEO tomorrow, and his first job is fixing the thing it somehow fell behind on: AI.
John Ternus takes over from Tim Cook after 25 years building Macs, iPhones and AirPods, going from hardware chief to running the whole $4.6 trillion machine.

Ternus, 51, joined Apple in 2001 and spent the last several years leading hardware engineering as senior vice president. That background shapes how he sees the job. He oversaw development of the iPhone, Mac, and a range of upcoming hardware products, some of which have been delayed while Apple caught up on AI software.
Apple stock closed Friday at $319.70. The company’s market cap is creeping toward $5 trillion, sitting about 6% below its record high set in July. Over the past 12 months, the stock has climbed nearly 40%.
Tim Cook, who grew Apple’s valuation 13 times during his 15-year run, moves into the role of executive chairman. He will continue managing Apple’s relationships with President Donald Trump and the Chinese government, and he has made clear he remains available to support Ternus when needed.
Cook’s transition was approved unanimously by Apple’s board in April after months of internal planning.
September 9 Product Launch Is the First Big Test
Ternus’s first public moment as CEO comes fast. Apple has a product launch scheduled for September 9 at its Cupertino campus. Expected on stage: the company’s first foldable iPhone, new Apple Watches, and a rebuilt version of Siri.
The new Siri is a big deal. Apple rebuilt the assistant using Google’s Gemini technology after facing criticism over the pace of its AI development. A leadership shake-up in the AI division preceded the change. Early reviews of the revamped Siri have been positive, according to Bloomberg.
Apple has also confirmed that macOS Golden Gate and updated Siri AI features will roll out by September 22.
IDC estimates Apple could capture 40% of the foldable device market by end of 2027 if the launch lands well.
Analysts Are Watching Valuation and AI Spending
On the analyst side, the picture is mixed but leaning positive. Bank of America’s Wamsi Mohan kept his Buy rating and $380 price target ahead of the leadership handover, expecting core hardware revenue to stay steady while Ternus works out how much to invest in AI infrastructure.
Craig Moffett of Moffett Nathanson flagged the valuation risk. At 33 times forward earnings, there is not much room for a slow product cycle.
Wall Street’s overall stance: Moderate Buy, based on 16 Buy, 10 Hold, and 4 Sell ratings over the past three months. The average price target sits at $338.99, about 6% above where the stock trades now.
On the supply chain front, Apple is dealing with a chip shortage affecting memory and storage components. The company has cited this as a factor behind recent price increases and does not expect the issue to clear before next year.
