The announcement came with five court affidavits. Three of them, dated March 25, June 25, and October 10, 2025, cover the crypto seizures. The other two, from July 29 and August 18, 2026, relate to the infrastructure takedowns.
Hamas used an encrypted group chat to share a rotating list of cryptocurrency donation addresses with supporters. Donors were also directed to a fundraising website linked to the group.
Investigators worked with multiple human sources to trace those wallet addresses. That work led to the seizure of funds across three separate operations in 2025.
The first action in March 2025 recovered around $201,400. That wallet system had moved more than $1.5 million since October 2024, according to the DOJ.
FBI Takes Control of Hamas Website
The FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office led the effort to seize the domains and servers behind Alqassam.ps, the main website for Hamas’s military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades.
Taking control of those domains allowed the FBI to intercept cryptocurrency donations before they reached Hamas. It also gave investigators access to data on thousands of individuals who had contacted the platform.
Those individuals reached out either to donate crypto or through traditional payment methods. The DOJ said that information will be used in future counterterrorism efforts.
Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg said the seizures were aimed at cutting off Hamas’s ability to recruit and fund attacks online.
U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro added that Hamas’s networks are “not secure” and that its crypto is “vulnerable.”
How the Operation Worked
The FBI coordinated across multiple divisions, including its Counterterrorism Division, Cyber Division, and New York Field Office.
Brett Leatherman, Assistant Director of the FBI’s Cyber Division, said the bureau seized online infrastructure and cryptocurrency to prevent terrorist organizations from using digital networks to raise money.
Special Agent in Charge Justin Garris said the goal was to reduce Hamas’s ability to receive donations and create distrust among its donor network.
The DOJ described the operation as part of an ongoing effort to disrupt Hamas financing following the October 7, 2023 attacks.
The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, with support from the National Security Division’s counterterrorism and cyber sections.
