TLDR
- Tether’s USDT stablecoin is returning to the Bitcoin network this month through a project called Utexo.
- USDT first launched on Bitcoin in 2014 before moving mainly to Ethereum and Tron.
- Utexo will use the RGB protocol to keep transaction details off Bitcoin’s public ledger.
- The setup will support private USDT transfers, direct BTC-USDT swaps, and Bitcoin-backed loans.
- Lightning Network support is planned as a next step after the Bitcoin mainnet launch.
Tether’s USDT stablecoin is set to return to the Bitcoin network this month. The move comes through a project called Utexo, which has been granted a commercial license to issue USDT on Bitcoin.

USDT is the world’s largest stablecoin, with a market cap of nearly $190 billion. It first appeared on Bitcoin back in 2014 through the Omni protocol.
Over time, most USDT activity shifted to other networks like Ethereum and Tron. Tether stopped issuing USDT through Omni in 2023 as that migration continued.
Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino hinted at the stablecoin’s return last month. He posted “It’s coming home” on social media platform X, referring to USDT’s path back to Bitcoin.
How Utexo’s Privacy System Works
Utexo was founded in 2025 and raised $7.5 million in funding this year. The company will issue USDT on Bitcoin and provide tools for exchanges, wallets, and payment providers to use it.

The project relies on the RGB protocol combined with Bitcoin’s UTXO model. UTXOs are leftover pieces of bitcoin from past transactions, similar to change from a cash purchase.
This setup uses client-side validation. That means transaction details stay off Bitcoin’s public ledger and are instead confirmed between the parties involved.
Bitcoin’s ledger is only used to prove ownership. This differs from Ethereum and Tron, which share account balances and transaction details openly on their public ledgers.
Tether holds around 100,000 BTC, worth about $8.4 billion as of mid-August. Utexo co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk said Bitcoin has long been a priority asset for Tether.
Three Main Uses for USDT on Bitcoin
Utexo lists three main use cases for the new system. The first is private USDT transfers between users.
The second is direct swaps between native BTC and USDT, without needing to go through an exchange. The third is lending, where users can borrow against native bitcoin without wrapping it on another blockchain.
Wrapped bitcoin tokens, like WBTC, currently require users to convert their BTC to use it on other networks. Utexo’s system aims to skip that step entirely.
There is a limit to how private these transfers can be. Utexo cannot freeze a UTXO the way Tether can freeze an address on Ethereum.
Instead, the company plans to maintain a blacklist of UTXOs linked to illegal activity. This list would be shared with exchanges and other platforms to block flagged funds.
Ihnatiuk explained that a flagged UTXO would become unusable. It could not be sent to a bridge, minting tool, or withdrawn to another network like Ethereum or Tron.
More than 450 businesses have expressed interest in Utexo so far. These include exchanges and wallet providers, though no formal partnerships have been confirmed yet.
Talks with larger financial institutions have also taken place. Utexo has not named any of these institutions publicly.
The initial rollout will launch on Bitcoin mainnet this month. Utexo plans to follow with support for the Lightning Network, Bitcoin’s faster payment layer.
The goal is to let USDT work as a fee-paying token on Lightning. This mirrors how USDC is being used on Arc, a blockchain network built by USDC issuer Circle.
The Bitcoin mainnet launch will serve as an early test of demand for private transfers, BTC-USDT swaps, and Bitcoin-backed lending through Utexo’s infrastructure.
