Crypto exchanges are where most people buy, sell, and trade digital assets. They connect bank money to blockchain networks and handle trillions of dollars in trades each year. This article reviews the latest figures on market size, trading volume, market share, fees, security, and regulation.
The data comes from CoinMarketCap, CoinGecko, CoinStats, and published industry reports and surveys. Numbers differ between sources because each one measures volume, users, and revenue in its own way. Where figures conflict, this article says so.
Crypto Exchange Market Size and Growth
The global crypto exchange market is projected to reach $71.35 billion in 2025. One forecast puts it at $260.17 billion by 2032, which is a compound annual growth rate of about 20.3%. The same forecast estimated the market at $24.75 billion in 2024.
Other reports use lower figures. Some place 2025 exchange revenue between $50 billion and $60 billion, while others cite $48.41 billion or $37.23 billion. The gap comes from different definitions of revenue and different lists of included services.
| Estimate | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 2024 market size | $24.75 billion | CAGR of 19.29% since 2019 |
| 2025 projection | $71.35 billion | Main forecast used in this article |
| 2032 projection | $260.17 billion | CAGR of about 20.3% |
| 2025 alternate range | $50 to $60 billion | Depends on assumptions |
| 2025 alternate estimate | $48.41 billion | CAGR of 14.2% to 2032 |
| Trading platform market, 2024 | $27 billion | CAGR of 12.6% from 2025 to 2034 |
Growth forecasts also vary by source. Reported rates run from 12.6% to 25.1% a year, depending on the report and the years it covers. Growth is linked to demand for derivatives, institutional flows, and tokenized products.
Centralized exchanges made up 90.76% of the 2024 exchange market by model. Spot trading produced 58.86% of exchange revenue that year, and fiat-to-crypto exchanges held about 59.72% of the market. Derivatives are expected to be the fastest-growing segment from 2024 to 2029.
By region, Asia-Pacific is projected to hold 42.3% of the exchange market in 2025. North America follows at 31.1% and is expected to be one of the fastest-growing regions. The global crypto market cap was estimated at $3.9 trillion in 2025.
More recent data shows a smaller total. CoinMarketCap listed the crypto market cap at $2.8 trillion in early October 2026, with 24-hour volume of $107.41 billion. CoinStats showed Bitcoin dominance at 54.9%.
Exchange counts are hard to pin down. Estimates run from hundreds to low thousands of active exchanges, but fewer than 100 dominate global volume. CoinMarketCap tracks about 254 spot exchanges, according to the latest reports.
Spending on infrastructure is rising to support more users. Exchanges are investing in scalability, security, and design. The market is also fragmenting, as more niche and regional platforms enter.
Largest Crypto Exchanges by 24-Hour Trading Volume
CoinMarketCap ranks spot exchanges using traffic, liquidity, trading volume, and confidence in the volume reported. Binance holds the top spot in that ranking. It reported $13.16 billion in 24-hour volume, the largest figure in the top 100 spot table.
CoinGecko shows a similar picture. Its data lists Binance at $13.23 billion in 24-hour volume, ahead of OKX at $3.04 billion and Coinbase Exchange at $2.92 billion. CoinGecko tracks 159 exchanges and reported total 24-hour volume of $115 billion.
| Rank by volume | Exchange | 24h volume | Weekly visits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Binance | $13.16 billion | 7,484,188 |
| 2 | CoinUp.io | $9.75 billion | 708 |
| 3 | Echobit | $9.07 billion | 1,782,883 |
| 4 | Pionex | $4.25 billion | 169,234 |
| 5 | LBank | $3.28 billion | 2,883,564 |
| 6 | BiFinance | $3.24 billion | 415,786 |
| 7 | Tapbit | $3.22 billion | 1,374,895 |
| 8 | BloFin | $3.16 billion | 1,897,072 |
| 9 | OKX | $3.08 billion | 2,033,212 |
| 10 | Coinbase Exchange | $2.91 billion | 4,375,260 |
Some exchanges report large volume with little web traffic. CoinUp.io reported $9.75 billion in 24-hour volume but only 708 weekly visits. Echobit reported $9.07 billion with about 1.78 million weekly visits.
Rankings that weigh traffic and liquidity can place such exchanges lower than a volume-only list would. This is why CoinMarketCap includes a confidence measure for reported volume. Readers should compare more than one metric before judging an exchange by volume.
Other large venues include Bybit at $2.43 billion, Gate at $2.30 billion, and Kraken at $1.96 billion. KuCoin reported $1.87 billion and MEXC reported $1.65 billion. Crypto.com Exchange reported $1.08 billion.
Volume figures also differ between publishers. One industry article listed SuperEx at $163.6 billion in 24-hour volume, with Binance second at $15.4 billion. Neither figure matches CoinMarketCap’s spot table, which shows how methods change the results.
Regional exchanges can also post large totals. Upbit reported $1.26 billion in 24-hour volume and Bithumb reported $838.6 million, and both trade only in Korean won. Local markets can support very large exchanges.
Traffic, Liquidity, and Market Counts
Binance also leads on web traffic and liquidity. It had about 7.48 million weekly visits and a liquidity score of 936, the highest in CoinMarketCap’s top 100 spot list. WhiteBIT ranked second for traffic at 5.16 million weekly visits.
| Exchange | Weekly visits | Liquidity score | Markets | Coins |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | 7,484,188 | 936 | 2,204 | 894 |
| Coinbase Exchange | 4,375,260 | 758 | 512 | 411 |
| MEXC | 4,183,426 | 731 | 2,600 | 1,490 |
| KuCoin | 3,898,792 | 673 | 1,653 | 1,010 |
| Gate | 2,773,882 | 804 | 2,458 | 1,755 |
| Bybit | 2,579,722 | 724 | 1,294 | 818 |
| OKX | 2,033,212 | 715 | 1,820 | 623 |
| Kraken | 1,099,449 | 770 | 1,591 | 742 |
Market and coin counts vary widely. MEXC lists 2,600 markets and Gate lists 2,458, while Coinbase Exchange lists 512. Gate supports 1,755 coins and MEXC supports 1,490, compared with 894 on Binance and 411 on Coinbase Exchange.
Fiat support also differs. Binance lists about 89 supported fiat currencies, and Coinbase Exchange lists about 64. Upbit and Bithumb support only the Korean won, and Binance TR supports only the Turkish lira.
A larger coin list does not always mean more trading. Coinbase Exchange has far fewer listings than Gate or MEXC but ranks higher in web traffic. Users often choose by region, fees, and trust rather than by the number of coins.
Liquidity scores try to measure market depth. Azbit scored 902, BiFinance 892, KCEX 890, and WEEX 885. Coinbase Exchange scored 758 and OKX scored 715.
Product lists are widening as well. Many platforms now bundle spot trading, derivatives, staking, lending, and tokenized assets. Staking and yield products give exchanges income that does not depend on trading volume.
Spot Market Share Among Centralized Exchanges
Binance held 39.8% of centralized spot trading volume in July 2025. MEXC followed with 8.6%, Gate with 7.8%, and Bitget with 7.6%. Bybit held 7.2%, Upbit 6.3%, OKX 6.0%, and Coinbase 5.8%.
These eight exchanges add up to 89.1% of spot volume. That fits with a finding from the EU’s market watchdog, which said about 10 exchanges process around 90% of volume. It also noted that Binance is often near half.
| Rank | Exchange | Share of spot volume |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Binance | 39.8% |
| 2 | MEXC | 8.6% |
| 3 | Gate | 7.8% |
| 4 | Bitget | 7.6% |
| 5 | Bybit | 7.2% |
| 6 | Upbit | 6.3% |
| 7 | OKX | 6.0% |
| 8 | Coinbase | 5.8% |
Spot volume grew 53.7% in July 2025 compared with June. Not every exchange gained, though. Crypto.com’s volume fell about 61.4% from the prior quarter in Q2 2025.
Coinbase’s spot share slipped to about 5.8% in July 2025 after a strong start to the year. It still has a large U.S. user base. Exchanges that offer derivatives and other advanced products often keep users longer.
Traditional finance is also moving in. CME’s crypto products saw a 140% year-over-year rise in average daily notional volume in Q2 2025. A report cited record combined spot and derivatives volume of $9.72 trillion on centralized exchanges in August 2025.
The gap between first and second place is 31.2 percentage points. Bitget and Bybit sit close together at 7.6% and 7.2%. Competition in the middle of the table is tight.
Spot trading remains the main revenue source. Some forecasts say about 61.3% of exchange revenue will come from spot trading in 2025. Derivatives are the fastest-growing segment on many platforms.
Exchange Trust Scores
CoinGecko scores exchanges on a 10-point trust scale. Six of the top 100 exchanges in its ranking hold a 10 out of 10. They are Coinbase Exchange, Kraken, Binance, OKX, MEXC, and Bitstamp by Robinhood.
| Exchange | Trust score | 24h volume |
|---|---|---|
| Binance | 10/10 | $13,226,751,470 |
| OKX | 10/10 | $3,042,095,675 |
| Coinbase Exchange | 10/10 | $2,924,318,403 |
| Kraken | 10/10 | $1,910,110,546 |
| MEXC | 10/10 | $1,219,097,492 |
| Bitstamp by Robinhood | 10/10 | $486,928,771 |
Most exchanges score lower. Of the top 100, 12 have a 9, 27 have an 8, and 30 have a 7. Sixteen have a 6, eight have a 5, and one, BtcTurk, has no score.
Trust scores do not always follow volume. Pionex reported $4.34 billion in 24-hour volume with a 6 out of 10, and Tapbit reported $3.27 billion with a 6. LBank reported $3.26 billion with a 9.
Consumer views point the same way. In the 2025 Gemini Global State of Crypto survey of 7,205 respondents, people favored U.S. and EU exchanges because they see them as safer. Users often rank Binance, Coinbase, and OKX among the most trusted exchanges.
Proof-of-reserves reports and audits now shape trust. Several exchanges publish third-party cryptographic proofs of their holdings. More than 70% of survey respondents also said they prefer mobile-first exchanges with an easy design.
The 7 out of 10 group includes HTX at $1.35 billion, Phemex at $890.4 million, and Bitrue at $566.5 million. The 8 out of 10 group includes Bybit EU, Bitfinex, Bithumb, and Bullish. Bullish reported $1.38 billion in 24-hour volume.
Decentralized Exchange Statistics
Decentralized exchanges, or DEXs, let users trade from their own wallets. Their volume grew in 2025. One report said DEX trading volume rose about 37% and averaged $412 billion a month.
In Q2 2025, DEX perpetual futures volume reached $898 billion. Hyperliquid captured about 73% of that, or roughly $655 billion by calculation. DEX spot volume hit $876.3 billion, up more than 25% from the prior quarter.
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| DEX perpetual volume, Q2 2025 | $898 billion |
| Hyperliquid share of DEX perps | About 73% |
| DEX spot volume, Q2 2025 | $876.3 billion |
| DEX-to-CEX spot ratio, Q2 2025 | About 0.23 |
| Average monthly DEX volume, 2025 | $412 billion |
| Ethereum share of DEX volume | About 87% |
| Solana DEX daily trades | Above $1.5 billion |
| Typical protocol fee | 0.05% to 0.3% |
The DEX-to-CEX spot volume ratio was about 0.23 in Q2 2025. That means DEXs handled roughly 23 cents of spot volume for every dollar on centralized exchanges. Centralized platforms still handle most derivatives trading and are more liquid for futures and options.
Ethereum-based DEXs captured about 87% of DEX volume, according to one source. Solana-based DEXs now exceed $1.5 billion in daily trades. Fees on DEXs usually run from 0.05% to 0.3% and go to liquidity providers instead of a central operator.
Risks remain. Smart contract exploits and front-running push users toward audited pools. Surveys show mixed views, with users valuing control of their funds but worrying about hacks and complex interfaces.
CoinStats tracks dozens of DEXs and perpetual platforms, including Uniswap, Hyperliquid, Raydium, and PancakeSwap. Uniswap appears in several versions, from V2 to V4, which splits its volume across listings. This makes direct comparison with centralized exchanges harder.
Cross-chain DEXs and bridges see heavier use for arbitrage and liquidity moves. Growth is strongest in emerging markets, where non-custodial access matters more.
Blockchain Share of Total Value Locked
Total value locked, or TVL, measures assets deposited in decentralized finance apps. Ethereum leads with 56.8% of TVL. Solana is second at 7.03%, followed by Tron at 6.54% and BSC at 4.35%.
Base holds 2.92% and Bitcoin holds 2.87%. Arbitrum has 2.53%, Avalanche 1.21%, Sui 1.14%, Hyperliquid 1.1%, and Aptos 0.9%. Other chains together make up 12.6%.
Bitcoin’s 2.87% is close to Base’s 2.92%. Hyperliquid, at 1.1%, is close to Sui at 1.14%.
Ethereum and its Layer-2 networks Base and Arbitrum together hold about 62.3% of TVL by calculation. The long tail of smaller chains shows how spread out the rest of the market is. It also helps explain why exchanges add multi-chain support.
Exchanges are adding support for Ethereum, Solana, and BNB Chain assets. Some also list wrapped tokens, synthetic assets, and tokenized real-world assets. Cross-chain bridges widen the number of tokens available on many platforms.
Crypto Exchange Fee Statistics
Most exchanges use maker-taker pricing, where higher trading volume lowers fees. Typical rates in 2025 ran from 0.10% to 0.40% for many pairs. Some exchanges offer zero-fee tiers on selected pairs.
Kraken Pro’s taker fee of 0.26% is 2.6 times Binance’s base rate of 0.10%. High-volume traders can lower both through tiers. Small traders usually pay the base rate.
| Platform | Maker fee | Taker fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Binance | 0.10% | 0.10% | Discounts when paying with BNB |
| Kraken Pro | 0.16% | 0.26% | Tiered discounts for high volume |
| BYDFi | 0.10% | 0.10% | Flat structure with voucher discounts |
| Gemini | N/A | 1.49% | Plus a 1.00% convenience markup |
| Typical DEX | 0.05% to 0.3% | 0.05% to 0.3% | Paid to liquidity providers |
Gemini shows how fee types differ. It charges a 1.49% transaction fee plus a 1.00% convenience markup on some purchases. That is far above the trading fees on advanced platforms.
Fees beyond trading also matter. Many exchanges charge for deposits, withdrawals, and network gas separately. Some build costs into the spread, so the listed fee is not always the full cost.
Exchanges are testing subscription tiers with lower fees or extra analytics. Platform upgrades such as multi-chain support and lower fees are meant to speed up adoption.
Crypto Exchange Security Statistics
Hacks and scams took $2.47 billion in the first half of 2025. After recoveries, net losses were about $2.29 billion. More than 344 hacking or scam events were recorded through mid-2025.
A separate tally said security breaches in 2025 had already passed $2.17 billion, ahead of full-year totals in some earlier years. The gap between the figures comes from different methods and cutoff dates.
Exchanges rely on several defenses. Cold storage and multi-signature setups remain standard for large holdings. Some exchanges also publish proof-of-reserves audits.
Smart contract audits for DEXs can cost tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Some attackers have used weak third-party wallet services to reach their targets. This shows that risk can sit outside an exchange’s own systems.
Security links back to trust. Exchanges that publish audit results and reserve proofs often rank higher in trust surveys. Users also say responsive support and few outages matter when they pick a platform.
Regulation and Exchange IPOs
Regulation is tightening. In 2025, 90% of centralized exchanges in North America were fully KYC-compliant, up from 85% in 2024. A total of 99 jurisdictions have passed or are putting in place the FATF Travel Rule for crypto transfers.
Policy reviews in 2024 and 2025 covered rules in 24 jurisdictions, which touch about 70% of crypto exposure. In Europe, exchanges are seeking licenses under MiCA. In the U.S., the OCC issued a joint statement in July 2025 on crypto safekeeping and risk management for banks.
Enforcement varies. Australia’s AUSTRAC ordered Binance’s Australian arm to appoint an external auditor over anti-money-laundering concerns. In the U.S., the SEC closed its investigation into Robinhood’s crypto arm with no action in early 2025.
Public listings grew in 2025. Gemini raised $425 million in September, Bullish raised $1.1 billion, and Circle raised $1.05 billion. eToro listed on Nasdaq and reported 40 million registered users.
| Company | Year | Amount raised |
|---|---|---|
| Bullish | 2025 | $1.1 billion |
| Circle (stablecoin issuer) | 2025 | $1.05 billion |
| Gemini | 2025 | $425 million |
More may follow. News reports say OKX is exploring a U.S. IPO after settling compliance matters. Morgan Stanley plans to add crypto trading through E*Trade in 2026.
Compliance is becoming part of the product. Several exchanges now build tools such as on-chain monitoring and automated reporting into their platforms. KYC rules also filter out some privacy-focused users.
Rules also shape where exchanges can operate. Some have exited strict markets, and others run in only one region to meet license rules. New local exchanges are launching in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America.
Users, Institutions, and Public Sentiment
About 28% of American adults own crypto. Younger users aged 18 to 34 dominate exchange use, and about 70% of crypto users trade through mobile apps. Many new users come from developing economies, where crypto is used for remittances and as protection from inflation.
A Forbes survey measured public views on crypto as an investment. 42.6% somewhat agree that it is legitimate and 23.8% strongly agree. Another 16.8% are neutral, 9.9% somewhat disagree, and 6.9% strongly disagree.
Institutions are also active. In 2025, 59% of surveyed institutional investors planned to put more than 5% of assets under management into digital assets. Over 75% expected to raise their crypto allocations that year.
Retail and institutional users behave differently. Retail traders lean toward spot trading and altcoins, while institutions favor Bitcoin, Ethereum, large-cap assets, derivatives, and custody. Retail investors made up about 43% of the market in 2024.
Asia-Pacific recorded a 69% year-over-year rise in on-chain crypto activity in the 12 months to June 2025. India and the U.S. rank at the top of one on-chain adoption index. Bitcoin is the best-known coin at 90% awareness, followed by Ethereum at 50%.
Sentiment is mostly positive. Combined, 66.4% of respondents agree that crypto is a legitimate investment, while 16.8% disagree. Surveys show retail sentiment is more bullish than institutional sentiment.
| Cryptocurrency | Awareness |
|---|---|
| Bitcoin | 90% |
| Ethereum | 50% |
| Dogecoin | 45% |
| Binance Coin | 36% |
| USD Coin | 27% |
| Tether | 26% |
| Solana | 21% |
| Cardano | 18% |
Conclusion
Crypto exchange data shows a market that is large, concentrated, and changing. Binance leads on volume, traffic, and spot share, while a small group of rivals holds most of the rest. Forecasts point to strong growth, though estimates range widely.
DEXs are gaining ground, and regulators are setting stricter rules. Security losses remain high, and trust scores and proof-of-reserves reports are becoming more important to users. Readers should check several sources before relying on any single figure.
