Memecoins are crypto tokens built on internet jokes, animals, and viral trends. They can rise fast, but the data shows most of them fade just as fast.
This article pulls together four recent data sources. They cover market size, lifespan, returns, trader profits, and scam losses through September 2026.
The numbers point one way for most coins. A small group of large tokens holds most of the value, and the rest lose much of their worth within a year or two.
Key Memecoin Statistics at a Glance
- The memecoin market is worth about $31.2 billion across roughly 6,270 tracked tokens (September 2026).
- The median memecoin hit its all-time high 17.2 days after it first traded.
- 81% of tracked memecoins fell 90% or more from their peak, and only 3.3% ever regained it.
- An equal-weight portfolio of the ten largest memecoins lost 78.74% from January 2025 to February 2026.
- About 97% of memecoins have died or lost most of their trading volume, according to Binance Research.
- Pump.fun’s graduation rate fell to 0.26% in June 2026.
How Big Is the Memecoin Market in 2026?
The memecoin market is worth about $31.2 billion in September 2026. That figure covers roughly 6,270 tracked tokens and comes from data verified on September 16. The total fell 4.7% over the prior 24 hours.
CoinLaw put the category near $30.6 billion in June 2026. The two figures come from different sources, but they sit within about 2% of each other.
Dogecoin leads by a wide margin. At $12.59 billion, it is more than four times the size of Shiba Inu at $2.95 billion. Dogecoin alone holds about 40% of the whole category.
| Coin | Price | Market cap | 24h volume | Network |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dogecoin (DOGE) | $0.08077 | $12.59B | $807.12M | Dogecoin |
| Shiba Inu (SHIB) | $0.0000050 | $2.95B | $79.19M | Ethereum |
| MemeCore (M) | $1.11 | $2.53B | $0.71M | MemeCore |
| Pump.fun (PUMP) | $0.003533 | $1.65B | $130.53M | Solana |
| Pepe (PEPE) | $0.0000033 | $1.41B | $230.14M | Ethereum |
| Official Trump (TRUMP) | $1.89 | $516.53M | $182.09M | Solana |
| SPX6900 (SPX) | $0.4649 | $432.81M | $7.71M | Multi-chain |
| Pudgy Penguins (PENGU) | $0.006836 | $429.45M | $136.89M | Ethereum |
| FLOKI | $0.00002375 | $229.12M | $17.84M | ETH + BNB |
| Bonk (BONK) | $0.0000026 | $227.43M | $29.77M | Solana |
The order below Dogecoin has changed since July. MemeCore, at $2.53 billion, and the Pump.fun token PUMP, at $1.65 billion, have both moved into the top five. Both are tied to meme infrastructure instead of a single joke coin.
Value is also bunched in a few places. CoinLaw reports that the Solana meme sub-category holds about $3.78 billion, compared with about $308.5 million on Base. The chain with the biggest launchpad holds the most meme value.
Market cap can hide a trading problem. MemeCore trades only $0.71 million a day against a $2.53 billion market cap, which is about 0.03% of its value. A holder who wants to sell a large position in a coin like that could move the price against themselves.
Supply is another limit. Only 42% of MemeCore tokens circulate, and about 27% of Official Trump tokens do. The rest are still to be released, which can add selling pressure later.
How Fast Do Memecoins Peak and Collapse?
Talos studied 150 memecoins that launched after the Solana memecoin wave began in December 2023 with BONK. It used the Kaplan-Meier method, a tool from medical research that estimates how long something survives.
Talos set three markers. The start is a coin’s first trade on an exchange. The peak is its all-time high price, and a collapse is a 95% drop from that peak.
The speed of the rise stands out. A quarter of the coins hit their peak within 1.6 days of trading. The median coin hit its all-time high after 17.2 days.
| Lifecycle measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Quarter of coins reach their peak | Within 1.6 days |
| Median time to all-time high | 17.2 days |
| Median time from peak to a 95% drop | 370 days |
| Average time to complete the full cycle (half of coins) | 456 days |
| Share down 95% from peak by day 1,000 | About 90% |
The fall takes longer than the rise, but it still arrives. The median coin lost 95% of its value from its peak about 370 days later. Half of the coins in the study went from launch to peak to a 95% drop in an average of 456 days.
By day 1,000, roughly 90% of the tokens had fallen 95% from their peak.
Most coins only get one run. Two-thirds of the Solana-era coins never staged a failed rally. They went up once, topped out within days, and never came close to that level again.
The remaining third took a few months, on average, to reach their all-time high.
Talos lists limits for its own study. A coin had to trade on at least one centralized exchange to qualify, so the sample leans toward coins that did better than most.
The 95% cutoff was also chosen by the authors, and a different cutoff would change the median. Talos says the lifespans here likely overstate how long a typical launchpad coin lasts.
How Many Memecoins Lose Most of Their Value?
Talos found that 81% of tracked memecoins fell 90% or more from their all-time high. Only 19% avoided a drop that deep.
Recovery is rare. Only five coins, or 3.3% of the sample, ever got back to their peak price.
Price since launch tells the same story. Only five of 151 tokens trade above their day-one price. After 300 days, a majority of tokens were worth about 10% of their starting value.
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Fell 90% or more from peak | 81% |
| Avoided a 90% drop | 19% |
| Regained all-time high | 3.3% (5 coins) |
| Trade above day-one price | 5 of 151 coins |
| Trade 95% below peak | More than half |
| Active addresses kept by major memecoins | No more than 7% of peak |
Size does not protect a coin. Three of the five largest tokens by market cap from this period, TRUMP, PUMP, and PENGU, are worth less now than at launch.
Talos also looked at on-chain use, counting Solana addresses that hold at least $1. Activity peaks early and rarely recovers. Today, the major memecoins keep no more than 7% of the active addresses they had at their peak.
Price and activity both fade after the early rush.
Memecoin Returns vs Bitcoin, Stocks, and Gold
Finance professor David Krause of Marquette University tracked the ten largest memecoins from January 2025 to February 2026. He used an equal-weight, buy-and-hold portfolio and 60 weeks of price data from Yahoo Finance.
The portfolio lost 78.74%. Over the same period Bitcoin lost 30.68%, the S&P 500 gained 17.84%, and gold gained 92.46%.
The gap between the memecoin portfolio and gold was 171.20 percentage points.
Every coin in the sample lost money. Dogecoin had the smallest loss at 70.02%, and Brett had the largest at 93.30%.
| Asset | Total return | Annualized volatility | Max drawdown |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dogecoin | -70.02% | 81.59% | -76.78% |
| Shiba Inu | -72.73% | 69.86% | -75.00% |
| Pepe | -77.78% | 113.82% | -80.00% |
| Official Trump | -85.19% | 110.57% | -84.09% |
| Bonk | -78.57% | 131.40% | -82.86% |
| Brett | -93.30% | 135.64% | -94.08% |
| SPX6900 | -70.79% | 159.43% | -84.58% |
| dogwifhat | -85.49% | 117.91% | -88.21% |
| Floki Inu | -81.21% | 108.70% | -83.78% |
| Popcat | -90.25% | 152.38% | -92.84% |
| Memecoin portfolio | -78.74% | 103.82% | -82.71% |
Official Trump launched on January 18, 2025. CoinDesk, cited by Krause, reports it reached a market cap above $90 billion within days and then fell about 94% from that peak.
In Krause’s sample it lost 85.19%. Its largest weekly gain was 71%, in the week of its launch.
Krause says the results probably understate the losses. His sample holds only coins that were still trading in February 2026, and smaller coins that went to zero are not counted.
He also points out that the losses hit the whole segment. Coins with different launch dates and sizes all lost money in the same period.
Memecoin Volatility, Drawdowns, and Risk
The memecoin portfolio moved far more than the other assets. Its annualized volatility was 103.82%. That is about 2.7 times Bitcoin’s 38.46%, more than six times the S&P 500’s 16.38%, and more than five times gold’s 18.63%.
The worst drop was also deeper. The portfolio fell 82.71% from its high point to its low point. Bitcoin’s worst drop was 44.38%, the S&P 500’s was 16.88%, and gold’s was 5.37%.
Memecoins also had fewer up weeks. The portfolio gained in 41.4% of weeks, compared with 49.2% for Bitcoin, 54.2% for the S&P 500, and 71.2% for gold.
The Sharpe ratio measures return after adjusting for risk. The memecoin portfolio scored -0.848 and Bitcoin scored -0.747. The S&P 500 scored 0.726 and gold scored 2.994.
| Metric | Memecoin portfolio | Bitcoin | S&P 500 | Gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Total return | -78.74% | -30.68% | +17.84% | +92.46% |
| Annualized volatility | 103.82% | 38.46% | 16.38% | 18.63% |
| Maximum drawdown | -82.71% | -44.38% | -16.88% | -5.37% |
| Sharpe ratio | -0.848 | -0.747 | 0.726 | 2.994 |
| Weeks with gains | 41.4% | 49.2% | 54.2% | 71.2% |
| Correlation with memecoins | 1.00 | 0.78 | 0.42 | -0.41 |
Memecoins also move with the rest of crypto, only harder. The portfolio’s correlation with Bitcoin was 0.78. Its beta to Bitcoin was 2.076, so a 10% drop in Bitcoin went with an average 20.8% drop in the portfolio.
The link to gold ran the other way. The correlation was -0.41, which means memecoins tended to fall when gold rose. A study cited by CoinLaw also found that memecoin correlations with the wider crypto market move toward 1 in stress periods.
Single coins vary. Annualized volatility in Krause’s sample ran from 69.86% for Shiba Inu to 159.43% for SPX6900.
CoinLaw, citing Binance Research, lists peak volatility readings of 301.8% for Pepe in April 2023, 63.4% for Shiba Inu in March 2024, and 29% for Dogecoin in November 2024.
Pump.fun, Launchpad Revenue, and Trader Profits
Pump.fun launched on January 19, 2024. CoinLaw says it has helped create about 12 million tokens since then. It was the first Solana app to pass $1 billion in total revenue.
The platform earned $124.7 million in the first quarter of 2026. That was about 36% of the $342.2 million earned by all Solana apps in the quarter.
Daily revenue has since dropped. It fell more than 83% to about $800,000 by June 2026.
| Pump.fun measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Launch date | January 19, 2024 |
| Tokens created | About 12 million |
| Total revenue | More than $1 billion |
| Q1 2026 revenue | $124.7 million |
| Share of Solana app revenue, Q1 2026 | About 36% |
| Daily revenue, June 2026 | About $800,000 |
| Graduation rate, June 2026 | 0.26% |
The graduation rate shows where new tokens end up. In June 2026 only 0.26% of Pump.fun tokens graduated from the launchpad. That was about 80% lower than three months earlier.
The launchpad earns a fee on each token creation and each trade. Its revenue depends on activity, not on whether any one token lasts.
Trader results improved in 2026. The share of Pump.fun traders in profit hit a low of 30.1% in June 2025. It rose to 56.8% in February 2026, 70.0% in March, and 73.3% in April.
From April 2024 onward, the share stayed below 50% in most months.
Most of the gains were small. In April 2026, about 2.05 million profitable wallets earned between $1 and $500, or 65.1% of the profitable group. Another 87,000 earned $500 to $1,000, and 169,000 earned more than $1,000.
That puts about 5.4% of profitable wallets above $1,000. CoinLaw describes the group as many small traders, not a pool of big winners.
Rug Pulls, Scams, and Why 97% of Memecoins Fail
CoinLaw, citing Binance Research, reports that about 97% of memecoins have died or lost most of their trading volume. The average memecoin lasts about one year. That is roughly one-third of the life of an average crypto project.
Scams add to the losses. Chainalysis estimated that a record $17 billion was stolen in crypto scams and fraud in 2025. Rug pulls, where creators drain a token’s funds and leave, made up more than $2.8 billion of that.
The average rug pull took about $510,000 in 2025. Chainalysis also flagged 74,037 tokens launched in 2024 as suspected pump-and-dump schemes. That equals about 3.59% of all tokens launched that year.
| Scam and failure measure | Value |
|---|---|
| Memecoins that died or lost volume | About 97% |
| Average memecoin lifespan | About 1 year |
| Total crypto stolen in scams, 2025 | $17 billion |
| Rug pull losses, 2025 | More than $2.8 billion |
| Average loss per rug pull, 2025 | About $510,000 |
| 2024 tokens flagged as pump-and-dump | 74,037 (3.59%) |
Several causes show up across the sources. Krause points to concentrated ownership, thin trading, and demand built on social media attention. The Top 10 guide lists attention decay, saying the price follows once a meme loses its cultural pull.
Supply schedules play a part too. Only 56% of the Pump.fun PUMP token supply circulates, and releases to the team and early investors can dilute holders.
The Top 10 guide says drops of 50% to 90% within days of a peak are routine in the category. Talos adds that millions of memecoins are created, but only a tiny share reach centralized exchanges and fewer last.
Memecoin Regulation and Market Rules
On February 27, 2025, the SEC’s Division of Corporation Finance said typical memecoins do not involve the offer and sale of securities. That means sellers do not need to register those sales under the Securities Act of 1933.
The CFTC keeps the power to act on fraud and market manipulation. It does not oversee memecoin markets the way it oversees derivatives.
On March 5, 2026, the SEC ended its lawsuit against Justin Sun, and a firm linked to him paid $10 million. In March 2026, a joint SEC and CFTC framework treated Dogecoin as a digital commodity.
| Date | Action | Outcome |
|---|---|---|
| February 27, 2025 | SEC staff statement on memecoins | Typical memecoins not treated as securities |
| March 5, 2026 | SEC ends Justin Sun case | $10 million paid by a linked firm |
| March 2026 | Joint SEC and CFTC framework | Dogecoin treated as a digital commodity |
| September 2026 | CLARITY Act Senate vote | Bill failed; US framework unresolved |
Rules in the US are still not settled. The Top 10 guide says the CLARITY Act failed its Senate vote in September 2026. It also says Bitwise closed its proposed Dogecoin ETF because of low institutional demand.
The guide also says celebrity and political tokens face particular scrutiny.
What the Memecoin Statistics Show
The data from all four sources points the same way. Memecoins peak within days, lose most of their value within about a year, and rarely recover.
The market is still large at about $31.2 billion, but one coin, Dogecoin, holds about 40% of it. Even the ten largest coins lost 78.74% in 14 months while gold gained 92.46%.
Launchpads earn fees whether or not a coin survives. Most traders make small gains at best, and scam losses reached billions of dollars in 2025.
Each study also has limits. Talos and Krause both say their samples lean toward survivors, so real results for the average coin were likely worse. Prices and rankings change daily, so check live figures before making any decision.
