TLDR
- Mastercard unveiled Stablecoin Security at Money20/20 USA on Monday. It gives banks a risk score before a stablecoin payment is completed.
- The tool combines payment data with blockchain analytics to flag fraud, scams and sanctions risks.
- Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first partners. It launches in North America first, with worldwide availability expected in 2027.
- The launch follows the $1.8 billion BVNK acquisition and last week’s Global Money Platform.
- Stablecoin supply growth has slowed this year, while transaction volumes have picked up.
Mastercard (MA) introduced a new service on Monday that lets banks screen stablecoin payments for risk before the money moves. The article text provided does not include a stock price or chart for MA, so no price move is reported here.
The product is called Stablecoin Security. Mastercard unveiled it at the Money20/20 USA conference.
It is a risk intelligence service for financial institutions. It checks where the money came from and looks for links to fraud, scams and sanctions violations.
The tool also reviews the context of each transaction before assigning a risk score. Mastercard delivers the information through an API, so banks can plug it into the fraud and compliance systems they already run.
Ann Johnson, Mastercard’s executive vice president of Security Solutions, said financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to take part with confidence. Her comments were shared with The Block.
Why the timing matters
Funds sent onchain are hard to recover once stolen. That makes a check before settlement the key feature here.
Stablecoins also add a layer of difficulty. Money can hop across several wallets and blockchains, which makes it harder to judge risk from start to finish.
Mastercard cited a study from the Bank for International Settlements. It looked at 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025.
Nearly 60% of those transfer events happened inside complex, multi-step transactions. Simple one-to-one payments were the minority.
Partners and rollout
Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first partners named. Both have also taken part in Mastercard’s Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program.
Borderless.xyz connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers in more than 113 countries and 72 currencies. Keyrails focuses on high-value cross-border trade payments, mostly in emerging markets.
In August, Mastercard and Borderless.xyz announced a Crypto Credential pilot. It involves Infinia, Walapay and Koywe and adds trust signals to cross-border stablecoin payments.
The stablecoin push has been busy lately. Mastercard closed its BVNK acquisition in August, after announcing a deal worth up to $1.8 billion in March.
Last week, the company launched its Global Money Platform. It combines fiat and stablecoin accounts, real-time conversion, card spending and local bank payouts through one API.
Mastercard expects to bring BVNK into its Stablecoin Security plans next year. That work is slated for 2027 alongside the wider rollout.
The market backdrop is mixed. Growth in the supply of digital dollars has slowed this year, though transaction volumes have risen, helped by remittances and cross-border payments.
A recent Standard Chartered report says the stablecoin market could reach $2 trillion by 2030. That is two years later than the bank first forecast.
Mastercard says Stablecoin Security will launch first in North America, with commercial availability worldwide expected in 2027.
