TLDR
- Railway disclosed a security breach on October 21 that may have exposed customer environment variables holding API keys and passwords.
- Researcher Taylor Monahan linked about $371,000 in crypto theft to the incident, across more than 500 transactions on at least 19 EVM chains.
- Her timeline places the first known theft at 19:36 UTC, more than two hours before Railway went public.
- Railway paused deployments and told all customers to replace their stored credentials.
- Railway has not confirmed the crypto losses or said whether blockchain private keys were exposed.
Railway, a cloud platform that developers use to deploy apps, has disclosed a security breach. Blockchain investigator Taylor Monahan linked the incident to about $371,000 in crypto thefts.

The company published its disclosure on October 21. It said it found unusual activity in systems that store customer environment variables.
These variables can hold API keys, database passwords and private registry credentials. An unauthorized party may have accessed encrypted variables and read the decrypted contents of some of them.
Railway said its investigation is still underway. It has not said how many customers were affected.
What the Crypto Theft Data Shows
Monahan reported on October 22 that attackers drained funds from private keys stored in Railway. She counted more than 500 transactions across over 200 addresses.
The activity spanned at least 19 EVM compatible blockchains. She estimated the losses at about $371,000.
She placed the first known theft at 19:36 UTC on October 21. She also said the transactions looked like the work of a standard wallet sweeper script.
Railway has not confirmed the losses. It has also not said how the attacker got the wallet credentials.
The $371,000 figure is an outside estimate. It is not known whether other wallets were hit.
Railway’s Response and Timeline
According to Monahan’s timeline, Railway paused builds at 07:24 UTC on October 21. By 09:28 UTC, its API, command line tool, dashboard and deployments were affected.
Railway published its disclosure at about 21:51 UTC. That was more than two hours after the first theft she identified.
Railway said the incident may be tied to attacks on platform companies aimed at AI inference providers. It has told upstream services so they can revoke keys.
The company urged all customers to replace stored environment variables and credentials. It also asked them to check logs for unusual activity.
Similar credential problems have led to crypto losses this year. Ostium lost nearly $18 million in USDC in July, and Syndicate Labs reported a leaked upgrade key in April.
In July, an Injective developer package was found to contain code that collected private keys. Security firm Socket said it was downloaded more than 300 times.
In an October 22 update, Railway said it had reset storage bucket credentials and GitHub tokens. Customers must redeploy services and reconnect their GitHub accounts, and Railway will email affected users once it confirms which accounts were hit.
