According to BYD, the fire occurred in a “three-dimensional parking garage” used to store test and scrapped vehicles. The company said the fire had been extinguished and that no casualties were reported.
Local fire authorities said the alarm was received at 2:48 a.m. in the Ma Luan subdistrict of Shenzhen’s Pingshan district. Emergency teams at both district and municipal levels were dispatched immediately.
Videos circulating on Chinese social media showed thick black smoke rising from a multi-storey structure at the facility. Flames were visible across a long section of the building, with fire trucks and police deployed to the scene.
Reuters verified the footage, which showed the scale of the blaze before it was brought under control.
BYD’s global headquarters are located in Shenzhen’s Pingshan district, the same area where the fire occurred.
Stock Reaction
BYD stock slipped 0.6% at 0208 GMT following news of the incident. The drop was modest, likely reflecting the fact that no injuries were reported and the fire was contained.
The affected parking structure stored test and scrapped vehicles, not production inventory or finished goods ready for sale.
EV Fires Burn Differently
Experts have noted that EV fires behave differently from those involving internal combustion engine vehicles. They tend to last longer and are harder to extinguish, partly due to the risk of reignition in battery cells.
It is not yet known whether the vehicles stored in the garage were electric models or legacy combustion vehicles used for testing purposes.
The cause of the fire has not been confirmed by authorities or BYD as of the latest update.
No further details have been released on whether any equipment, prototypes, or data were affected in the blaze.
BYD has not indicated any disruption to production or operations at the Pingshan facility.
The company did not say how many vehicles were stored in the parking structure at the time of the fire.
Local authorities confirmed the fire was fully extinguished, and no injuries were recorded at the scene.
