The tokens are only available to eligible investors outside the United States. Coinbase says more stocks will be added in the coming weeks.
Each token represents a direct, 1:1 claim on an underlying share. The shares are held by Alpaca, a regulated broker and custodian, in a bankruptcy-remote structure.
The tokens are issued under Abu Dhabi Global Market regulation. Coinbase set up its international tokenization hub in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
Coinbase uses its B20 framework to mint the tokens natively on Base, its layer-2 blockchain. Dividends and stock splits are reflected in the tokens automatically.
How the Tokens Work
Investors can hold the tokens in self-custody wallets and trade them around the clock. That is a key difference from traditional stock markets, which have set trading hours.
Once minted, the tokens can move between wallets without a whitelist requirement. They can also be used across decentralized finance applications on Base.
For example, users could supply tokenized Nvidia shares as collateral for loans on Aave. Tokenized Apple shares can also be supplied to decentralized exchanges like Aerodrome.
Coinbase has integrated Chainlink to provide continuous price data for the tokenized stocks. This allows DeFi protocols to use the assets in lending markets, exchanges, and structured products.
Chainlink’s feeds value each token using the underlying stock price and a Coinbase-supplied multiplier. The multiplier accounts for dividends and corporate actions.
Growing Market for Tokenized Stocks
Coinbase is not alone in this space. Rival exchanges Kraken and Binance are also working to bring stock trading onchain.
The total value of tokenized stocks across the market has now reached around $2.48 billion. That is up 5.2% over the past 30 days, according to RWA.xyz data.
Monthly transfer volume has climbed to $27.28 billion. The number of holders has surpassed 2.1 million.
The broader tokenization market covers more than just stocks. Banks and asset managers have moved tens of billions of dollars of U.S. Treasuries and private credit onchain.
Citi has projected that tokenized securities could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030.
