What the Pledge Could Cost
The U.S. Census Bureau says there are just over 72 million people under 18 in the country. Other reports put the number at about 73 million.
SpaceX stock closed at $146.03 on Friday, down 1.74%. At that price, one share for each child would be worth a little over $10.5 billion.
Some reports put the total closer to $11 billion at current prices. That would be nearly double the record gift Michael Dell made to fund Trump Accounts.
Musk owns billions of SpaceX shares. The giveaway would take only a small part of his holdings.
Questions Musk Has Not Answered
Musk did not say who counts as a “kid.” It is unclear whether the gift would go to all minors under 18 or to a smaller group.
The number changes depending on age. About 18.5 million of the children in the U.S. are newborns up to 4 years old, according to the Census Bureau.
He also did not explain what he meant by “first of many.” No details were given on how the shares would be delivered or when.
It is also unclear how the shares would be held. Musk did not mention whether accounts would be set up for each child.
Other SpaceX Gifts for Children
SpaceX is not new to this kind of giving. COO Gwynne Shotwell has pledged a personal donation of more than $320 million in SpaceX stock.
Her gift is meant to fund Trump Accounts for more than two million children. Trump Accounts are investment accounts set up for kids in the U.S.
Michael Dell previously made a record-breaking gift to fund Trump Accounts. Musk’s pledge would be much larger if carried out in full.
Market Reaction
SpaceX stock rose about 1% in premarket trading on Monday. It was priced at $147.49 before the market opened, up $1.46.
On Friday, the stock closed at $146.03, down $2.59. Musk is the founder and CEO of SpaceX.
The company has not shared more details about how the pledge would work. Musk’s post on X remains the only public statement on the plan so far.
