The funding round could value the ChatGPT maker at more than $1.4 trillion. Existing backers SoftBank Group and Abu Dhabi-based MGX are in talks to join.
The push comes before rival Anthropic’s expected stock market debut. Anthropic could list in mid-to-late November 2026.
Why OpenAI Is Raising Money Now
Both AI developers are drawing interest from many of the same investors, including sovereign wealth funds and large institutions. OpenAI’s push could help it secure commitments before investors turn their focus to Anthropic’s listing.
Reuters said the faster timeline could let OpenAI raise capital before Anthropic’s financial disclosures invite comparisons between the two businesses. Both companies are competing for the same pool of money.
OpenAI also faces large infrastructure costs. The Financial Times previously reported that the company could burn nearly $280 billion by 2030.
OpenAI was valued at $852 billion in March after raising $122 billion. The new target is well above that earlier figure.
The funding effort comes during volatile technology markets. Bond yields are rising, and investors are watching the debt needed to finance AI infrastructure.
Revenue Figures for Both Companies
OpenAI is telling investors its annualized revenue reached nearly $50 billion at the end of September. It expects that figure to reach $70 billion by year-end, according to one person familiar with the matter.
The company says growth picked up after the launch of its GPT-6 Astra model.
Anthropic’s quarterly revenue rose to $16.8 billion in the third quarter from $11.6 billion in the second. Slower monthly growth has raised questions about its valuation.
Reuters previously reported that Anthropic’s annualized revenue reached roughly $65 billion by July.
OpenAI has ruled out an IPO in 2026. Its plans have reportedly moved to 2027 because of growing concerns about AI model safety.
In June, CEO Sam Altman said the company would not rush into an IPO until it could “make confident safety decisions.” He said OpenAI could consider going public after gaining a better understanding of how to manage the next stage of AI development.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has repeatedly urged tech firms and governments to slow AI development to reduce security risks. Anthropic’s reported draft prospectus warned that advanced AI could pose “catastrophic or existential risks to humanity.”
As of Monday’s report, OpenAI is still seeking about $30 billion, and Anthropic’s debut is expected in the coming weeks.
