TLDR
- Micron announced Micron Research Labs, a new U.S.-based research hub backed by a planned $10 billion investment over 10 years.
- The facility will be headquartered in Boise, Idaho, focusing on memory technologies, AI compute, packaging, and chip manufacturing.
- Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the lab set to host hundreds of researchers.
- The $10B investment is separate from Micron’s previously announced $250 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing and R&D.
- Support for the initiative came from executives at Nvidia, Apple, Applied Materials, and Lam Research.
Micron Technology (MU) launched Micron Research Labs on Thursday, announcing a planned $10 billion investment to build the first dedicated memory research hub in the United States. MU stock was down 0.39% to $937.11 in trading following the announcement.
The lab will be based on Micron’s campus in Boise, Idaho, with construction expected to break ground in calendar year 2027.
The facility is designed to host hundreds of researchers and will focus on memory technologies, advanced memory and compute architectures, packaging, and semiconductor manufacturing.
Micron says the investment will be spread over the next decade and will fund university collaborations, global satellite labs, and partnerships across the semiconductor ecosystem.
CEO Sanjay Mehrotra framed the move in AI terms. “The decisions we make today will determine who leads the AI economy of tomorrow, and America’s AI future will be built on American-made memory,” he said.
Micron holds 62,000 lifetime patents and is the only U.S.-based manufacturer of memory. That distinction sits at the center of how the company is pitching this investment.
The $10 billion figure is separate from the $250 billion Micron has already committed to U.S. manufacturing and R&D. That broader plan is expected to create more than 90,000 jobs.
Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick backed the announcement, saying it “will strengthen American innovation, create hundreds of jobs and ensure memory never limits innovation.”
Industry Backing
The announcement drew support from some of the biggest names in tech. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Apple CEO Tim Cook, and executives from Applied Materials and Lam Research all voiced support for the initiative.
White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios also weighed in, adding a government stamp of approval to what Micron is positioning as a nationally important project.
Research Scope
Micron Research Labs will connect to the company’s existing research footprint across the U.S., Europe, Japan, India, Singapore, and Taiwan.
The institution is focused on research with a horizon beyond 10 years, with an aim to develop the next generation of memory researchers alongside near-term breakthroughs.
Key research areas include advanced memory and compute systems, packaging innovations, and chip manufacturing processes, all tied to demand from AI infrastructure.
Customers, academics, government agencies, and semiconductor industry partners are expected to collaborate at the new hub.
The lab will sit on Micron’s existing Boise campus, with groundbreaking planned for sometime in 2027.
