TLDRs;
- Robinhood stock climbed 4.7% as investors focused on derivatives growth rather than declining cryptocurrency trading activity.
- Event contracts surged twentyfold year over year, becoming a much larger contributor to Robinhood’s transaction business.
- Options activity remained strong, with contracts increasing 66% from last year and supporting overall platform engagement.
- Analysts remain largely bullish on HOOD despite valuation concerns and risks from further weakness in retail trading.
Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ: HOOD) posted a strong market performance on Thursday, with shares rising 4.7% to close at $99.37 after the company released preliminary July operating data that highlighted a major shift in trading activity on its platform.
The rally came despite a sharp slowdown in cryptocurrency trading. Investors instead focused on rapid growth in event contracts and continued strength in options trading, two areas that are increasingly becoming central to Robinhood’s transaction-based revenue model.
After the close, the stock edged slightly higher in after-hours trading, suggesting that traders viewed the update as a sign of improving business diversification rather than a warning about weaker crypto demand.
Crypto Weakness Continues
Robinhood’s July figures showed crypto notional volume fell 62% compared with the same month last year, extending the broader cooling trend in retail cryptocurrency activity. Monthly crypto volume also declined 33% from June to $10.9 billion.
The contrast with derivatives was striking. Event contracts reached 6.1 billion during July and were up 20 times from a year earlier. Options contracts climbed to 324 million, representing a 66% year-over-year increase.
The data suggest that many retail traders are shifting toward shorter-duration, event-driven products and options strategies rather than actively trading cryptocurrencies.
While crypto remains an important business segment, its relative contribution appears to be shrinking. In the second quarter, Robinhood generated $100 million in crypto transaction revenue, compared with $156 million from event contracts and $342 million from options.
Revenue Mix Keeps Improving
Robinhood’s second-quarter results help explain why investors were willing to overlook the crypto slump. The company reported record quarterly revenue of $1.31 billion and diluted earnings per share of $0.62.
Options remained the largest transaction category, while event contracts recorded the fastest growth rate by a wide margin. Equity trading also showed solid momentum, with equity notional up 59% from a year earlier.
Management has emphasized that the company is becoming less dependent on any single asset class. The latest activity data appear to reinforce that narrative.
Another encouraging sign was customer growth. Funded accounts increased by 80,000 during July to reach 28.5 million, while net deposits totaled $5.6 billion. Although total platform assets slipped 4% to $355 billion, deposits continued to arrive at a healthy pace, indicating that customer engagement remained resilient even as market values fluctuated.
Market Cap Jumps $4 Billion
The stock rally added roughly $4 billion to Robinhood’s market capitalization, bringing it to about $89.3 billion. The gain was notable because overall trading activity was not exceptionally strong; company data showed activity running below its recent average.
Robinhood also outperformed several financial peers during the session. Coinbase rose 3.26%, Charles Schwab gained 0.66%, and Interactive Brokers slipped 0.26%, leaving HOOD as the clear leader among the group.
Analyst sentiment remains predominantly positive. According to market data, 15 of 18 analysts rate the stock a buy, while three recommend holding and none advise selling. The average price target stands at $123.58, implying potential upside of about 24% from the latest close.
However, valuation remains a key debate. Robinhood trades at roughly 43.9 times earnings, a premium to both Interactive Brokers and Charles Schwab. The stock also carries a relatively high beta, reflecting its tendency to experience larger price swings than traditional brokerage firms.
