- CRM stock edged down around 0.3-0.4% in premarket trading Wednesday.
Salesforce hit a rough patch Wednesday morning when a widespread service outage knocked customers off its cloud software suite just as Dreamforce, its flagship annual conference, was getting into full swing in San Francisco.
The trouble started at around 7:50 a.m. UTC, or 3:50 a.m. Eastern time, according to Salesforce’s own status page incident tracker. Customers across all three of the company’s operating regions were affected, mostly in the U.S.
The alert warned that users “may experience severe delays, intermittent errors, or an inability to access some services.” Not exactly the kind of headline you want trending while thousands of customers and partners are gathered at your biggest event of the year.
CRM stock was down about 0.4% in premarket trading Wednesday. The broader market was mixed, with S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures each posting modest gains.
Engineers Deploy Fix Across All Regions
By 6:56 a.m. Eastern, Salesforce’s engineering team had identified the problem, tested a solution in a controlled environment, and confirmed it worked. The company then began rolling out the fix across all regions.
Salesforce said customers were “starting to see their service return to normal.” The company is also working on what it described as a permanent, code-level resolution to prevent a repeat.
The timing was awkward. Dreamforce is one of the biggest events on the enterprise software calendar. It has run every year since 2003 and serves as a major commercial and marketing platform for Salesforce.
Recent Earnings and AI Push
The outage comes as Salesforce has been leaning hard into artificial intelligence. The company recently announced a partnership with Anthropic to embed Salesforce customer data and workflows into Anthropic’s Claude chatbot through a new plugin built for sales teams.
That Anthropic announcement came alongside Salesforce’s fiscal second-quarter earnings, where the company reported revenue of $11.35 billion, up 11% year over year.
Salesforce also raised its full-year revenue guidance by $200 million at that time.
The outage is now resolved, with a permanent code-level fix still in progress as of Wednesday morning.
