SK Hynix (SKHY) is getting fresh attention from Wall Street after Needham analyst Quinn Bolton lifted his price target to $220 from $200, while keeping a Buy rating. The move follows one of the company’s largest shareholder return programs to date.
SK Hynix’s board approved a 40 trillion won share repurchase, covering around 24 million shares, or roughly 3.3% of its total share count. The company also raised its 2025-2027 shareholder return goal to “over 50%” of cumulative free cash flow, up from “within 50%.”
Bolton, who ranks 20th out of more than 12,400 analysts tracked by TipRanks, has a 100% success rate on SKHY stock with an average return of 5.8% per rating. His new $220 target implies upside of around 41.6% from current levels.
The analyst said management believes SK Hynix’s strong business fundamentals and cash generation are not fully reflected in the stock price. He expects the company to generate nearly 500 trillion won in free cash flow over 2025-2027.
Bolton’s model now accounts for roughly 250 trillion won in buybacks and dividends by the end of 2027. His new price target is based on a nearly 6x P/E multiple of his CY28 EPS estimate.
Strong Q2 Results Back the Bull Case
SK Hynix posted strong second-quarter numbers on July 29. Revenue jumped 257% year-over-year to $56.9 billion, while operating profit surged 557% to $43.4 billion.
JPMorgan estimated the company could return at least $130 billion to shareholders over the coming years. That number sits at the center of the bull case right now.
Bolton also sees SK Hynix as a key player in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) demand tied to AI infrastructure growth. The company’s cash generation and capital return strategy underpin his continued Buy rating.
Monday Selloff Hits the Stock
Despite the analyst optimism, SKHY dropped around 5% on Monday. The South Korean presidential office refused to clarify ongoing negotiations with Washington and denied reports that the U.S. had pressured Seoul to prioritize U.S.-based manufacturing.
That lack of clarity raised fresh questions about SK Hynix’s long-term capital plans, particularly given its recent commitment of $38 billion to new domestic fabrication facilities.
The broader tech sector also fell Monday, with the Nasdaq Composite down over 1%. Micron (MU) dropped nearly 6% and SanDisk (SNDK) fell around 6.5%.
For the five trading days heading into Monday, SKHY was down about 9%. Micron and SanDisk also saw similar weakness over the same stretch.
One factor traders are watching: Nvidia (NVDA) reports earnings on August 26. A strong print from Nvidia could act as a catalyst for memory names.
SKHY carries a forward price-earnings ratio of 6.4x. Wall Street’s overall consensus sits at Strong Buy, based on 10 Buy ratings in the past three months, with an average price target of $248.
