The surge pushed CXMT’s market capitalisation to around 3.65 trillion yuan ($540 billion), making it the most valuable listed company in mainland China — overtaking ICBC.
CXMT raised 66.6 billion yuan ($9.8 billion) in its IPO, marking China’s biggest ever mainland tech share sale. That tops the 46.3 billion yuan raised by SMIC back in 2020.
Part of the dramatic price move came down to simple supply and demand. Only 7% of CXMT’s stock was available for trading on day one, which poured fuel on an already hot debut.
“The reason for the extraordinary bounce this morning is that only 7% of the shares are available for trading,” said Anna Macdonald, investment strategy director at Hargreaves Lansdown.
CXMT is the world’s fourth-largest DRAM chipmaker, holding around 8% of global market share. It sits behind Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron — three companies that together control roughly 90% of global DRAM production.
The AI boom is at the heart of all of this. The race to build data centres has created a major shortage of DRAM chips, pushing prices higher and sending memory chip valuations soaring across the board.
AI Demand Driving the Shortage
Advanced memory chips are critical components in AI servers. That demand has spilled over into the broader DRAM market, tightening supply for chips used in everything from laptops to smartphones.
Apple is reportedly testing CXMT’s chips for use in its products — a sign of how customers are looking to diversify their supplier base as the shortage bites.
TrendForce analyst Ellie Wang said the IPO is unlikely to ease the current shortage immediately, as capacity expansion typically takes a year or more.
CXMT’s Path to Scale
CXMT plans to use most of the IPO proceeds to boost production capacity and fund research and development. The listing gives the company access to capital that analysts say will help it expand globally.
Larry Yang of First Seafront Fund Management said the listing would “lay a solid foundation” for production growth and help lift CXMT’s market share worldwide.
Zhang Guobin, founder of eetrend.com, called the IPO a “turning point in the global storage industry landscape.”
CXMT is on the Pentagon’s list of Chinese companies with alleged military ties, though that designation does not currently prohibit US firms from doing business with it.
The debut follows a strong run for memory chip stocks globally. SK Hynix jumped 13% on its first day of Wall Street trading earlier this month, after raising $26.5 billion in the largest ever US listing by a foreign firm. Its market cap crossed $1 trillion in South Korea in May.
Samsung and Micron have also crossed the $1 trillion market cap mark recently, a milestone driven largely by AI chip demand.
