TLDR
- Amazon will purchase 2 million additional Nvidia GPUs for deployment in 2027 and 2028
- The deal adds to 1 million Nvidia chips Amazon already committed to in March
- Chips include Nvidia Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra GPUs
- Nvidia CFO confirmed Amazon will also adopt Nvidia’s full physical AI stack for warehouse robots
- Nvidia stock rose 4% after hours; Amazon gained around 0.7%
Amazon is set to deploy 2 million additional Nvidia GPUs across its AWS data centers over the next two years, the two companies confirmed Wednesday. Nvidia stock jumped 4% in after-hours trading on the news, while Amazon moved up around 0.7%.
The chips will be rolled out in 2027 and 2028. This comes on top of the 1 million Nvidia GPUs Amazon announced in March, which are already being installed in AWS data centers this year.
The latest deal covers Nvidia’s Blackwell Ultra, Rubin, and Rubin Ultra GPUs. These are high-end chips built for training and running AI models, and they carry list prices in the tens of thousands of dollars per unit, though large customers typically negotiate discounts.
Amazon and Nvidia did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.
Nvidia CFO Colette Kress confirmed the partnership on the company’s earnings call Wednesday afternoon. She said Amazon’s AWS division “is deploying an additional two million GPUs starting this quarter through the second of FY29.”
Amazon Also Adopting Nvidia’s Physical AI Stack
Kress also revealed that Amazon will adopt Nvidia’s full physical AI stack to power its fleet of warehouse robots. That adds a second layer to the partnership beyond just data center compute.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spoke about the deal on CNBC Wednesday evening. “This is going to be a great partnership,” he said.
Amazon has been building out its own chip capabilities through Annapurna Labs, which makes its own CPU and an AI accelerator called Trainium, designed to compete with Nvidia’s GPUs. The next version of Trainium will reportedly use Nvidia networking technology.
Cloud Giants Still Leaning on Nvidia
Microsoft and Alphabet’s Google are also developing their own in-house chips, yet both remain major Nvidia customers. The pattern holds for Amazon too.
The three cloud hyperscalers are betting that custom silicon can deliver better efficiency for their specific workloads. But for now, Nvidia’s GPUs remain the go-to hardware for large-scale AI model development.
Amazon’s total Nvidia GPU commitment now stands at 3 million units when combining the March agreement and Wednesday’s announcement.
Nvidia’s earnings call Wednesday served as the backdrop for the announcement. The stock’s after-hours gain of 4% reflects how closely investors watch these hyperscaler partnership updates.
Jensen Huang’s CNBC appearance after the earnings report underlined the scale of the Amazon relationship, with both CEOs publicly backing the expanded deal.
