TLDR
- Google will launch a prototype satellite carrying its Trillium TPU chips on SpaceX’s Transporter-18 mission next Thursday.
- The mission is part of Project Suncatcher, Google’s effort to run AI workloads in orbit using solar power.
- Ground tests at UC Davis showed the chips can handle radiation beyond a five-year orbital lifecycle.
- GOOGL stock ticked up about 0.5% in early trading after the announcement.
- Wall Street holds a Strong Buy consensus on GOOGL, with an average price target near $429.
Alphabet stock rose about 0.5% in early trading this week after Google revealed plans to send AI chips into orbit. The move came as the company detailed its next step in Project Suncatcher, a research push to test artificial intelligence computing in space.
Google plans to launch a prototype satellite next Thursday aboard SpaceX’s Transporter-18 rideshare mission. The spacecraft will carry Trillium Tensor Processing Units, Google’s custom AI chips, built to handle basic AI queries from orbit.

The project was developed with satellite imaging company Planet Labs. It marks Google’s first live operational test of its AI hardware outside a ground-based data center.
Why Google Is Looking to Space
Data centers on Earth use huge amounts of electricity and water. Many also face long waits to connect to local power grids, which slows expansion.
In orbit, satellites can fly in paths where sunlight is nearly constant. Google estimates this could generate up to eight times more power than a typical ground-based solar array.
That extra power could let Google run AI workloads without competing for land, permits, or grid capacity back on Earth. The company sees this as a long-term way to scale compute as AI demand keeps climbing.
Before launch, Google put its Trillium chips through heavy testing. Engineers used UC Davis’s Crocker Nuclear Laboratory to simulate high-g vibration and blast the hardware with proton beams.
The results showed the chips could survive more radiation than they’d typically face over five years in orbit. Still, engineers say the real test only happens once the hardware is actually flying.
Space brings challenges that don’t exist on the ground. There’s no air in a vacuum, so heat can’t dissipate the normal way.
Google’s satellite will rely on heat pipes and radiative cooling to keep the TPUs from overheating. Data from this flight will feed into a bigger test in 2027, when Google plans to connect multiple satellites together.
What Comes Next for the Project
If this satellite performs well, Google wants to build networks of connected satellites down the line. These would pass data between each other using light beams, forming a kind of orbital data center system.
Google isn’t alone in eyeing space for compute. SpaceX is building a Gigasat Factory in Bastrop, Texas, aimed at mass-producing AI-ready satellites as early as late 2027.
Commercial use of space-based AI computing is still years off. But the industry is clearly testing the idea rather than just talking about it.
Wall Street remains upbeat on Alphabet regardless of the space plans. Analysts have handed GOOGL a Strong Buy consensus rating, based on 24 Buy ratings and four Holds over the past three months.
The average price target sits at $428.88 per share. That implies upside of roughly 26% from current levels.
Next Thursday’s launch will give Google its first real data from orbit. The company says results from that flight will help shape whether space-based AI hardware becomes part of its longer-term infrastructure plans.
