TLDR
- Microsoft unveiled the Surface Laptop Ultra, a new $2,599 laptop built around Nvidia’s AI hardware.
- The device uses Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX Spark GPU and ships starting October 16.
- Microsoft introduced “Execution Containers,” a security tool meant to stop AI agents from misusing data.
- Meta’s Muse AI agent and DeepSeek’s V4 model will be able to run natively on the new Windows hardware.
- Rising memory costs have pushed AI PC prices higher across the industry, including for rivals like Apple.
Microsoft stock edged up 0.23% in after-hours trading Wednesday after the company revealed its new AI-focused laptop lineup. The move came as Microsoft tries to push more artificial intelligence power directly onto consumer devices instead of relying on the cloud.
The Surface Laptop Ultra starts at $2,599 and is now available for preorder. Shipping begins October 16.
The laptop runs on Nvidia’s Blackwell RTX Spark GPU. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the chip matches the processing power of the company’s 2016 DGX-1 server, a machine that once cost $250 million.
Microsoft executive Pavan Davuluri unveiled the device at a company event in San Francisco. He said it includes the first magnetic USB-C charging port, similar to Apple’s MagSafe connector, plus two standard USB-C ports.
The laptop weighs 4.4 pounds and has a 15-inch display. The top configuration includes a 20-core processor, 128 gigabytes of memory, and one terabyte of storage, which pushes the price to $5,899.

Microsoft isn’t currently ranked among the top six PC makers by unit shipments, according to Gartner. The company is betting AI features can help it stand out in a crowded field.
Along with the hardware, Microsoft introduced Microsoft Execution Containers. The tool is designed to stop AI agents from accessing data or taking actions without permission.
Anthropic, OpenAI, and Nvidia all plan to use the new containment system. Davuluri said IT departments will be able to set rules that Windows then enforces automatically on each employee’s machine.
AI Moves to the PC
Microsoft said several AI models that once needed cloud access can now run locally on the new machines. That list includes Nvidia’s open-source Nemotron model and a version of Chinese firm DeepSeek’s V4 model.
Davuluri said DeepSeek’s V4 can run on machines with at least 60 gigabytes of memory. He added it can outperform OpenAI’s GPT-5 on some coding and reasoning tasks.
Microsoft’s own Copilot assistant will split tasks between the cloud and the device itself. Copilot chief Jacob Andreou said the cloud will still handle the toughest jobs, while lighter tasks can run locally to save cost or protect privacy.
Meta will also bring its Muse AI agent to Windows as a native app. The open-source OpenClaw agent system is set to work with Microsoft’s new security tools too.
Price Barrier
Pricing remains a sticking point for AI-ready hardware. A memory chip shortage has pushed costs higher across the whole industry.
Nvidia’s own DGX Spark AI desktop has jumped about 75% since launch and now costs $6,950. Apple’s comparable MacBook Pro, with a 40-core graphics chip and similar storage, costs $6,700.
Microsoft’s entry-level Surface Laptop Ultra costs more than Apple’s base MacBook Pro. It does pack 24 gigabytes of memory compared with 16 gigabytes on Apple’s starting model.
Analyst Anshel Sag of Moor Insights & Strategy said the timing is awkward. He noted the software for on-device AI is finally ready, but the hardware needed to run it has gotten pricier.
Microsoft has sold its own computers since 2012. CEO Satya Nadella said Tuesday that the company’s approach to the PC market is shifting as AI reshapes what a computer is expected to do.
