The announcement came on Monday, April 27. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The podcast covers topics including relationships and financial health through Winfrey’s interviews with cultural figures and everyday people. Past guests include Serena Williams, Hugh Jackman, Ina Garten, and Adam Grant.
Starting this summer, the show will expand to two new episodes per week. From July, Wondery will distribute the podcast across Amazon services including Prime Video and Amazon Music.
The show will continue to be available on YouTube and other podcast platforms alongside its new Amazon home.
A Broader Content Play
The deal goes beyond the podcast itself. It also includes rights connected to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” library, “Oprah’s Book Club,” and “Oprah’s Favorite Things.”
That gives Amazon the ability to tie Winfrey’s content across its audio, video, retail, and advertising businesses — a wider footprint than a standard podcast licensing deal.
Winfrey said the deal allows her to “continue the work I feel called to do – opening the door for conversations that matter.”
Wondery Builds Its Roster
Amazon has been building out its Wondery slate as it looks to compete in an increasingly crowded podcast market. Rivals include Spotify (SPOT) and Alphabet′s GOOGL) YouTube.
The Oprah Podcast joins existing Wondery titles such as “New Heights with Jason and Travis Kelce” and “Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard.”
Podcasts have become a key growth area for both media and tech companies as advertisers follow audiences toward on-demand audio and video content.
Amazon ($AMZN) stock was down 0.59%, or $1.55, trading at $262.44 at the time of the report.
