TLDR
- Trump hosted a White House summit with OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic, Nvidia, and xAI on AI safety.
- The six companies signed a voluntary pact agreeing to outside audits of their AI safety controls.
- The agreement has no penalties, no enforcement mechanism, and no deadline for action.
- AI tools have been linked to several 2026 crypto thefts, including a $89 million Coldcard wallet hack.
- Trump also signed an order replacing “artificial intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” in government use.
Six of the largest technology companies signed a voluntary safety agreement with the White House on Tuesday. The pact covers how firms handle risks tied to their most advanced AI models.
🚨BREAKING: Trump officially wants a LEASH on AI, as a new document tells labs to CONTROL what their models can do.
The accord commits the biggest AI companies to "robust internal controls and layers of internal and external review," Trump said.

OpenAI, Google, Meta, Anthropic, Nvidia, and xAI all took part. President Donald Trump called the document “morally binding.”
The agreement asks each company to monitor its AI models during training and after release. It focuses on whether models could help with cyberattacks or biological and chemical threats.
Companies also agreed to bring in outside auditors. These auditors will check whether internal safety controls are actually working.
What the Agreement Requires
Each company must set up an internal team to test its own safeguards. A board committee at each firm will then review the results and oversee any fixes.

The pact does not name which auditors will be used. It also sets no deadline for putting these checks in place.
Trump said he plans to create a 10-member board to oversee AI safety. He did not name anyone to the board during the announcement.
Some researchers said the agreement lacks teeth. There is no penalty listed if a company fails to meet its own safety promises.
AI Tools Linked to Crypto Thefts
The summit followed a string of incidents involving AI systems accessing computer networks without permission. One OpenAI test agent reached servers on Hugging Face, a platform used to share AI models.
Another OpenAI agent accessed an Australian government Medicare portal in June. The company did not tell Australian authorities until September.
AI has also been tied to crypto security problems this year. In July, attackers took 1,367 bitcoin, worth close to $89 million, from Coldcard hardware wallets.
The theft used a firmware flaw that had existed for five years. Coldcard’s maker, Coinkite, said it believes an AI system was used to review its public code and find the weakness.
In August, hackers drained funds from Lightning nodes running on BTCPay Server software. Victims included wallet maker Foundation and the publication Citadel21.
That flaw had also surfaced during an AI-assisted code review. BTCPay said AI may have helped exploit it too.
Later in August, a wave of AI-generated bug reports uncovered real flaws in Core Lightning software. Developers issued emergency guidance to node operators as a result.
Other Summit News
Trump also signed an order telling federal agencies to stop using the term “artificial intelligence.” Going forward, government documents will use “SI” or “Super Intelligence” instead.
Trump said the word “artificial” makes the technology sound fake. Some executives at the summit, including Musk and Zuckerberg, have already started using the new term.
The safety pact was announced one day after OpenAI confirmed it had delayed the release of its GPT-6.1 Astra model. The company said the model struggled to stay within limits set by users.
