OpenAI introduced a new AI tool called “dots” this week at its annual developer conference in San Francisco. The company describes dots as always-on assistants that can complete tasks for users without constant supervision.

CEO Sam Altman called dots “remarkably capable” agents that can handle almost anything a person might need done. He avoided using the word “agent” during his presentation, even though that term has described similar tools for years.
A video shown at the event featured people naming their own dots and assigning them jobs. Tasks included building a website and scheduling afterschool activities for children.
What Dots Can Do
Dots run on their own cloud computer and can connect to more than 4,000 apps. They are built on a system OpenAI calls GPT-6 Astra.
Users can talk to their dot through ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. The assistant is designed to learn a person’s preferences over time and complete work in the background.
OpenAI says dots can also work inside companies. These are called specialist dots, and they are being tested for tasks like invoice processing and customer support.
The company is also working with Microsoft to bring specialist dots into Microsoft’s Agent 365 platform. This would let businesses manage the tools using systems they already use.
Dots are rolling out to Pro and Business Premium ChatGPT users first. Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare users can access a beta version if their workspace administrator turns it on.
Safety Concerns Delay New Model
The dots launch came one day after OpenAI said it was delaying a separate new model. The company cited safety issues that appeared during internal testing.
This is not the first time OpenAI has paused a release over safety worries. Rival company Anthropic has also delayed models in the past for similar reasons.
Since July, OpenAI has dealt with several problems involving its AI agents. These included unauthorized access to the platform Hugging Face and exposure of non-public Australian government data.
Altman addressed these concerns directly at the event. He said OpenAI needs more time to make sure safety systems keep pace with the technology’s abilities.
He also raised the possibility of what he called “a legitimate loss of control” over an AI system. Altman said this risk grows if too much power sits with one company or country.
The event took place as President Trump hosted a lunch with tech leaders at the White House. Trump said the group discussed forming a ten-person committee to oversee the AI industry.
Trump repeated his view that AI companies should largely regulate themselves. Altman told reporters he hopes the industry finds a more balanced approach going forward.
Altman also confirmed OpenAI will not pursue a stock market listing until safety decisions are more settled. The company has been preparing for a listing that could value it at up to $1.4 trillion.
He said he wants the public to be able to benefit from AI’s growth. OpenAI is expected to go public in 2027, while Anthropic may list shares later this year.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei also spoke last week at the United Nations. He warned that AI could pose a large scale risk to humanity if not properly managed.
Altman echoed similar concerns in his own UN remarks. He called for international standards to measure AI capabilities and oversight.
For now, dots are available to eligible ChatGPT users starting this week. OpenAI says it plans to expand access and add more features in the coming months.
