The Gibraltar Financial Services Commission granted the Distributed Ledger Technology Provider license. It went to Revolut Global Digital Assets Limited, a newly created subsidiary.
Revolut announced the news on Monday, October 19.
What the License Allows
Revolut says the license will support its growing international presence. It will cover crypto offerings in key expansion markets beyond the UK and the European Economic Area.
The company has not named the specific countries. It has also not shared launch dates.
A Revolut spokesperson confirmed this to Cointelegraph. The spokesperson said the license will allow crypto services in additional international markets.
Gibraltar was one of the first places to set up a dedicated regulatory framework for DLT firms. Revolut described the framework as clear and strict.
Revolut’s Current Crypto Operations
Revolut already offers crypto services through Revolut Ltd in the UK. It also runs Revolut Digital Assets Europe Ltd across the European Economic Area.
The European operations fall under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, known as MiCA.
The company reports more than 80 million retail customers worldwide. About 16 million of them use its crypto services.
Emil Urmanshin, General Manager of Crypto and New Bets at Revolut, commented on the approval. He said it reflects the company’s commitment to high standards of regulatory compliance.
Urmanshin said Gibraltar’s oversight of digital assets makes it a good fit for Revolut’s global operations. He added that the company is building trusted and secure crypto services for international customers.
Fabian Picardo, Chief Minister of Gibraltar, also welcomed the news. He said Gibraltar has long had a strict regulatory environment for DLT firms.
Picardo said Revolut’s decision to expand its crypto business from Gibraltar shows the appeal of the jurisdiction.
The license follows other recent regulatory steps. In July, Revolut received in-principle approval to offer crypto services in Dubai.
In September, US regulators gave preliminary conditional approval for Revolut to set up a national bank. The bank would offer digital asset custody and crypto-related payments.
Revolut has not said when it will begin offering crypto services under the Gibraltar license or which countries will come first.
