TLDR
- Apple stock rose 2.6% as John Ternus officially became CEO, replacing Tim Cook who moves to executive chairman.
- Tim Cook grew Apple from a $350 billion company to over $4.5 trillion during his 15-year tenure.
- A fresh analyst buy rating on AAPL was issued the same day as the leadership transition.
- Apple has a major product event set for September 9, expected to feature the iPhone 18 and possibly the first foldable iPhone.
- Apple outperformed a weak market, with the S&P 500 down 0.4% and Nasdaq down 0.7% on the day.
Apple stock traded as high as $325.86 on Tuesday, up 2.6% from Monday’s close of $316.85, as John Ternus officially stepped into the CEO role.
The move came as Tim Cook signed off after 15 years leading the company. Cook’s final post on X read: “Sending lots of love to the Apple community on my last day as CEO. Thank you for being a constant source of inspiration.”
Ternus, 50, is a 25-year Apple veteran who previously served as senior vice president of hardware engineering. He oversaw the engineering of key products including the iPad, AirPods, and Apple Watch.
The transition had been telegraphed well in advance, and markets treated it as an orderly handover. Investors appear comfortable with Ternus stepping in given his deep product background.
Cook’s track record is hard to argue with. From August 2011 to Monday’s close, AAPL surged 2,274%. A $1,000 investment at the start of Cook’s tenure would now be worth $23,740, excluding dividends.
Apple added $4.32 trillion in market cap under Cook, making it the second largest company in the world behind Nvidia. Revenue on a trailing 12-month basis hit $467 billion, up 364% from when Steve Jobs last ran the company.
“Cook’s strength was execution, turning an already iconic company into one of the most profitable and valuable businesses the world has ever seen,” said Jay Woods, chief market strategist at Freedom Capital Markets.
A fresh analyst buy rating on AAPL landed on the same day as the transition, adding to the positive momentum around the stock.
What’s Next for Ternus
Ternus inherits a company at a product inflection point. Apple has a launch event confirmed for September 9, expected to feature the iPhone 18 lineup. Analysts are also watching for what could be Apple’s first foldable smartphone.
Apple unveiled new Mac mini models in late August powered by its first 2-nanometer M6 chip. The company has also flagged an AI-powered Siri update set to arrive in September.
“At 50, Ternus is roughly the same age Cook was when he replaced Jobs, but his engineering and product background offers Apple something different as it searches for its next big innovation and plays catch-up in AI,” Woods noted.
Market Context
Apple’s gains stood out against a down tape. The S&P 500 fell 0.4%, the Dow slipped 0.2%, and the Nasdaq dropped 0.7% on the day.
No major macro data or Fed commentary drove the session. Apple’s move was entirely company-specific.
Tim Cook transitions to executive chairman, keeping him connected to the business he spent 15 years building.
The September 9 event will be Ternus’s first major public stage as CEO.
