Lowe’s Companies Inc. (LOW) stock fell about 2% on Wednesday even as the home improvement retailer rolled out a new drone delivery pilot. The drop came despite what looks like a forward-looking move for the company’s e-commerce arm.
The pilot launched at Lowe’s store in Matthews, North Carolina. It marks the first time a home improvement retailer has offered drone delivery to customers.
Lowe’s built the service through a partnership with Wing, the drone unit owned by Alphabet (GOOGL), and DoorDash (DASH). Customers can place orders through a dedicated storefront inside the DoorDash app.
Deliveries can arrive in as fast as 20 minutes. The drones can carry roughly 2.5 pounds per flight and operate within a five mile radius of the store.
What Customers Can Order
The pilot covers more than 100 items. That includes hand tools, paint products, tape, batteries, soap and all-purpose cleaner.
These are the kinds of items shoppers often realize they’re missing partway through a project. Lowe’s chief information and AI officer, Seemantini Godbole, said the goal is to cut down on trips back to the store.
Godbole told CNBC that customers frequently get interrupted mid-project when they discover a missing item. The drone option lets them keep working without leaving home or a job site.
The service adds to Lowe’s existing fulfillment options. Those already include buy online pick up in store, curbside pickup and same-day delivery.
Room to Expand
Lowe’s said the pilot could grow beyond North Carolina if it performs well. The company plans to watch feedback from store staff and DoorDash before making changes.
Godbole said the tech team is monitoring the store daily. She described the approach as staying agile so adjustments can happen quickly based on real results.
Lowe’s isn’t alone in testing drone delivery. Walmart (WMT) said earlier this year it plans to expand its own Wing partnership to more than 270 stores by 2027.
Amazon (AMZN) has also been pushing into the space. The company said last month it intends to bring its Prime Air service to close to 500 cities and towns by the end of the year.
Lowe’s reported fiscal 2025 sales of more than $86 billion. The company operates over 1,750 stores and employs about 300,000 people.
On Wall Street, analysts currently rate LOW a Moderate Buy. That rating is based on 16 Buy calls and 7 Hold calls, according to TipRanks data.
The average price target on LOW sits at $253.50. That figure implies upside of roughly 33% from current levels.
The highest price target among analysts covering the stock is $275. Wing’s drone operations in the Charlotte area already existed before this pilot, giving Lowe’s an established delivery network to plug into.
