TLDR
- Google released Gemini 4 Argon, a new frontier AI model, on Wednesday.
- The model is first going to trusted testers in Google’s Fairwind Program.
- Argon will cost $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
- The price undercuts rivals from Anthropic and OpenAI.
- Alphabet stock stayed flat after the announcement.
Google introduced its newest artificial intelligence model this week. The company calls it Gemini 4 Argon.
Google says the model handles tasks like software engineering, legal and finance work, and cybersecurity defense. It is built to work through long and complex problems.

The model is not available to everyone yet. Google is starting with a small group of testers.
Who Gets Early Access First
Google is giving early access through its Fairwind Program. This program includes trusted cyber defense teams.
These teams will use Argon to find software flaws. They will fix the flaws before the model becomes more widely available.
Google is also working with a United States government program. That program reviews frontier AI models before they are released to the public.
Alphabet is the parent company of Google. Its stock barely moved after the news came out on Wednesday.
How Much Argon Will Cost
Google set an introductory price for Argon. It costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
Tokens are small pieces of text. They are used to measure how much an AI model is used.
This price is lower than some competing models. Anthropic offers a high-end model priced at $10 per million input tokens and $50 per million output tokens.
Anthropic also has a cheaper option. That one costs $4 per million inputs and $20 per million outputs.
OpenAI has a similar pricing split. Its top model costs $10 per input and $50 per output. A newer, cheaper version costs $2 per input and $10 per output.
Argon arrives after Google fell behind in the AI race. Models from OpenAI and Anthropic had moved ahead of Google’s prior releases.
Some people inside Google have doubts about Argon’s strength compared to rivals. A report from Bloomberg said some staff worry it may not match top competing models. Other staff inside the company disagree and believe it performs well.
Google says Argon already powers some of its own internal work. Employees are using it for coding, research, and writing tasks.
The company shared examples of the model’s use. One team used Argon agents to find memory savings across Google’s data centers. Google says this could free up large amounts of storage space once fully rolled out.
Argon is also being used to help rewrite old computer code into a newer programming language called Rust. Google said this includes work on a system with more than 800,000 lines of code.
Google said Argon can also act as a cybersecurity tool. It can search for software flaws and fix them on its own.
A cybersecurity firm called Wiz is already using Argon in a program that protects public infrastructure for free. Google says the model found a flaw in healthcare software that earlier AI models missed.
Google said it is adding new safety steps before the model becomes widely available. These include stopping the model from being misused for cyberattacks or harmful science requests.
The company says it is also working to prevent the model from being tricked by hidden instructions hidden in other files or text.
Google plans to release Argon in stages. It will first go to paid API customers and subscribers to its AI Ultra plan. Enterprise customers and the general public will get access later.
