Constellation Energy (CEG) stock is in focus after the company announced a major new deal with Amazon. The two companies signed a 20-year power purchase agreement on Tuesday.
Constellation Energy Corporation, CEG
The deal centers on the Calvert Cliffs nuclear plant in Maryland. It’s the state’s only nuclear facility.
Amazon will purchase 690 MW of power from the plant. Calvert Cliffs has a total capacity of 1,790 MW.
The agreement is expected to drive more than $3 billion in infrastructure investment across Maryland. That includes roughly 190 MW of new emissions-free generating capacity.

That new capacity is scheduled to come online between 2030 and 2032. It will add to the plant’s existing output.
Beyond the main power deal, Constellation and Amazon also signed a retail supply agreement. This will help support Amazon’s operations across the 13-state PJM power market.
PJM is one of the largest electricity markets in the country. It spans states from Illinois to Virginia.
Why Nuclear, Why Now
Tech companies are racing to secure reliable power sources. AI computing requires massive amounts of electricity, and data centers need power that doesn’t fluctuate.
Nuclear plants offer that kind of steady, round-the-clock output. That’s made them attractive partners for companies like Amazon, Microsoft, and Google as they build out AI infrastructure.
Calvert Cliffs already plays an outsized role in Maryland’s energy mix. The plant generates about 80% of the state’s clean energy.
That’s enough electricity to power more than 1.3 million homes. It’s a key piece of the regional grid.
What This Means for Constellation
The Amazon deal could strengthen Constellation’s case for renewing Calvert Cliffs’ operating license. The company is seeking another 20-year extension for the plant.
Long-term commitments from major customers like Amazon help justify that kind of investment. Utilities need assurance that demand will stay high for decades.
The agreement also opens the door to further development at the site. That includes potential advanced nuclear projects and other clean-energy additions.
Constellation has been expanding its footprint with tech companies over the past year. The company has pursued similar power deals as data center demand climbs.
Amazon, meanwhile, continues building out its data center network to support AWS and its AI ambitions. Power supply has become one of the biggest bottlenecks in that expansion.
The deal was announced Tuesday evening and confirmed in a joint statement from both companies. Details on pricing terms were not disclosed.
Calvert Cliffs remains central to Maryland’s energy supply. The plant’s role is expected to grow as the new agreement takes shape over the next several years.
