TLDR
- Coinbase completed its integration with Deribit, giving eligible US institutions regulated access to global crypto derivatives.
- The Oct. 1 migration moved Coinbase International Exchange accounts, balances, and positions over to Deribit.
- Institutional options access through Coinbase Prime is expected in the coming weeks, with US retail access planned later in 2026.
- The rollout follows CFTC staff guidance from May that opened a regulated path for US clients to reach offshore derivatives markets.
- Coinbase also registered Coinbase Clearing LLC in September and filed paperwork for US single-stock perpetual futures.
Coinbase has finished folding its international derivatives business into Deribit. The move gives eligible US institutions a regulated doorway into markets that had mostly been out of reach.

The company confirmed the integration on Wednesday. Coinbase International Exchange balances and positions were already moved over to Deribit on Oct. 1.
Crypto derivatives make up roughly 80% of global crypto trading volume, according to Coinbase. US traders have historically lacked a regulated route to that activity.
That started to shift in May. The CFTC issued guidance letting Coinbase Financial Markets connect US clients to global derivatives markets.
How US Institutions Will Get Access
Eligible US institutions will reach Deribit’s options and perpetual futures through Coinbase Prime and Coinbase Financial Markets. That unit is regulated by the CFTC.
Previously, institutions needed offshore entities and separate trading setups to reach the same markets. The new structure keeps everything inside one regulated relationship.
Coinbase says institutional options access through Prime should arrive in the coming weeks. Clients can already begin onboarding, with trading on Bitcoin, Ethereum and other assets to follow once access goes live.
Coinbase is directing clients to their account managers for eligibility checks and timing. Existing spot trading relationships stay in place during the rollout.
Retail traders are next in line. Coinbase plans to open options to eligible non-US retail customers in the coming weeks, followed by US retail access later this year.
The Regulatory Groundwork Since May
The current rollout traces back to a May 29 announcement. The CFTC had issued staff guidance tied to contracts listed on Deribit FZE, Coinbase’s affiliated foreign venue.
CFTC staff said certain crypto perpetual contracts described in Coinbase’s request could qualify as foreign futures under Commission Regulation 30.1. Staff also allowed certain transfers of customer-owned digital assets to a foreign broker affiliate for margin.
Coinbase closed its $2.9 billion purchase of Deribit in August 2025. At the time of the deal, Deribit was handling more than $185 billion in monthly trading volume and carried about $60 billion in open interest.
Coinbase has been building out other derivatives infrastructure too. On Sep. 28, the CFTC registered Coinbase Clearing LLC to clear fully collateralized futures, options on futures and swaps using USDC collateral.
Coinbase called that registration the final piece of its “end-to-end derivatives infrastructure.” External clearing partners will keep supporting its margined derivatives business.
Days earlier, on Sep. 1, Coinbase Derivatives filed Form 1-N for security futures exchange registration. Coinbase Financial Markets filed Form BD-N for a limited-purpose security futures broker-dealer license.
Those filings relate to Coinbase’s plan for US single-stock perpetual contracts. The company said in its announcement, “We’re working to bring single stock perps to the US.”
The filings did not include a launch date, a list of supported stocks, or proposed leverage limits.
