Bitcoin Treasuries shared the news in an X post on October 26. It is the first reported Metaplanet holding for the Vanguard FTSE All-World ex-US Small-Cap ETF.
Vanguard manages more than $13 trillion in assets. The firm has long taken a careful approach to crypto.
The disclosure drew attention from the crypto community.
Vanguard funds and Metaplanet
Other Vanguard funds already hold the stock. The Total International Stock Index Fund raised its position to 15.64 million shares, worth about $53.5 million.
Last year, the Vanguard FTSE Japan ETF reportedly bought 704,500 shares worth around $2.1 million.
The small-cap fund tracks an index of companies outside the United States. Its holdings follow the index, so Metaplanet can enter the portfolio as its market value changes.
The $7.5 million stake is small. The fund holds about $11.34 billion in assets, so the position is roughly 0.07% of the total.
Metaplanet’s Bitcoin plans and share price
Metaplanet held 44,000 BTC as of September 30. In the third quarter, it sold 10,000 BTC and bought 11,000 BTC.
CEO Simon Gerovich said this made it the second-largest listed corporate Bitcoin holder. In October, the company set a target of keeping 85% to 90% of its assets in Bitcoin.
The company plans to raise ¥52 billion, about $340 million, through zero-interest convertible bonds due in 2031. About ¥23.6 billion is for repaying debt, and up to ¥28.3 billion is for share buybacks.
Metaplanet bought back nearly 74 million shares on October 14 at ¥261 each. The cost was about ¥19.31 billion.
The company is also building a U.S. arm. In August, it agreed to a deal with Nasdaq-listed Super League Enterprise involving 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash.
The deal would give Metaplanet about 95.7% of the business, to be called Superplanet. Super League shareholders have approved it, and completion is expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.
Metaplanet shares closed down 0.75% at ¥263 on Monday in Tokyo. The stock traded between ¥254 and ¥269, with volume near 13 million shares against an average of about 27 million.
In the U.S., its over-the-counter shares closed Friday at $1.66, up 0.30%. Bitcoin rebounded more than 1% from a 24-hour low of $79,331 as traders await this week’s Fed rate decision.
