The products offer up to 5x leverage. Traders can bet on rising or falling crypto prices without an expiration date.
How the New Contracts Work
Regular futures contracts expire on set dates. Perpetual contracts let traders keep positions open as long as they meet margin requirements.
The contracts support long and short positions. They also include isolated margin, take-profit orders and stop-loss orders.
Retail customers can use the Crypto.com mobile app. Institutional and experienced traders get access through the exchange. The company has not said what makes a trader eligible.
Crypto.com recently registered as an introducing broker with the National Futures Association. OG.com runs a CFTC-regulated exchange, clearinghouse and futures commission merchant. That setup supports the new offering.
Perpetuals usually rely on funding payments between long and short traders. These payments help keep contract prices close to spot market prices. When a contract trades above its reference price, longs generally pay shorts. The reverse is true when it trades below.
Leverage lets traders hold larger positions with less starting collateral. Liquidation can still happen if price moves use up the available margin.
Crypto.com’s 5x cap is lower than the 20x to 100x available on many overseas platforms.
Background on Perpetual Futures
Economist Robert Shiller proposed the underlying idea in 1993. Bitmex helped popularize the crypto version in May 2016 with its XBTUSD contract, which offered leverage up to 100x.
Perpetuals later became one of the busiest products on offshore crypto exchanges. They removed the need to roll expiring futures into new contracts.
Kris Marszalek, founder and CEO of OG.com and Crypto.com, said traders now have direct access to continuous liquidity, flexible leverage and built-in risk controls. The companies plan to offer perpetuals alongside spot crypto, prediction markets and rewards.
The launch follows the CFTC’s May decision to open U.S. markets to crypto perpetuals. The agency approved Kalshi’s bitcoin perps and gave no-action relief to Coinbase for digital commodity derivatives. Kraken launched U.S. perps on Kraken Pro in June after buying Bitnomial.
Crypto.com is also looking at stock derivatives. Nadex, the exchange under OG.com, registered with the SEC last month to trade security futures. Marszalek said at the time that the company was working with the SEC and CFTC on single-stock perpetual futures.
Ondo Perps CEO David Wells told The Block in September that U.S. perpetuals are a “huge opportunity.” He said offshore platforms would need different clearing and settlement arrangements to meet U.S. rules.
On Tuesday, the launch began with crypto perpetuals only.
